Mary Wilson died at her home in Las Vegas on Monday night, her publicist confirmed. She was known as a founding member of The Supremes with Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.

Mary’s death was announced by her agent Jay Schwartz but the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Tributes have poured in for the much-loved singer and many share their sadness at the news.

A statement from Berry Gordy, the founder of the Motown label, said: “I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of The Supremes.

“She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of The Supremes.

She gained much of her fortune as a vocalist in The Supremes.

Mary was born in Greenville, Mississippi on March 6, 1944.

She began earning her fortune as a singer in 1961 when The Supremes, then known as The Primettes, were signed to Motown Records.

Originally being signed with four members, the band became a trio before having success with their first number one single, Where Did Our Love Go, in 1964.

This was followed by a string of hits and the band had 12 number one songs over the years.

Mary continued to build her bank balance in the band as they became the best-charting female group in the United States.

After The Supremes disbanded, the singing legend continued to work in the industry.

Mary signed with Motown on a solo deal and released her debut album, named Mary Wilson, in 1979.

She also added to her impressive wealth by featuring in various musical theatre productions.

In 1986, Mary shared her story in her popular memoir, titled Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme.

The book made new sales records and stayed on the best-seller list for many months.
