Prawn toast toasties were brought to the public’s attention by Jamie Oliver, in his Channel 4 show ‘Keeping Cooking Family Favourites’. The idea was a simple combination of toasties, and the prawn toast you’ll get at a local Chinese takeaway.

“It’s basically a mash-up between a toastie – which we all love in my house – and those beautiful prawn toast that you get in a Chinese restaurant,” he explained.

“We’ve got some lovely uncooked prawns. I’ve got an egg, ginger, spring onions, some chilli dipping sauce, [and] a bit of soy sauce.

“I love it. The ginger, spring onion, prawns… What a combo.

“It’s the crunch of the sesame seeds, and the sweetness of the chilli sauce. It’s just everything you love about prawn toast.”

Jamie revealed that he had fun coming up with the recipe, because he likes to explore cooking with restaurant favourites.

The recipe is incredibly simple, and it only takes 20 minutes to make.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can try serving your prawn toast toastie with a side salad or cucumber pickle, he added.

Here’s everything you need to make enough prawn toast toasties for two people at home.

How to make prawn toast toasties

Chop up your prawns into fine pieces, making sure to keep four of them back for later.

Pop the sliced prawns into a bowl, and combine them with some trimmed spring onions, grated ginger, soy sauce, and egg yolk.

Again, make sure to keep the egg white behind for later – it’ll come in handy!

Mix everything up together, and then divide the filling into two. Spread each half onto a single slice of bread, and pop the remaining two slices of bread on top to make a sandwich.

Brush both sides of the sandwiches with the remaining egg white to give it a nice gloss, and then stick the sesame seeds onto the bread.

Halve your four remaining prawns, and push them into one side of the bread, so that they stick.

If you have your own toastie maker, then simply pop your sandwiches in it, and wait for three minutes.

Otherwise, use a frying pan and get it very hot. Use a drop of oil to stop it sticking, and then place the sandwich onto the pan.

Let it cook for two-and-a-half minutes on each side, and then serve with the sweet chilli sauce on the side.
