I'm a vet & there's a dog breed people need to steer clear of unless they're minted – they're walking health conditions | The Sun

A VET has revealed the dog breed he'd never recommend people get because they're "walking health conditions."

Dr. Bozelka explained that while French Bulldogs are "pretty cute" and "have a tonne of personality," they can come with a whole host of health conditions.

The vet, who goes by @dr.bozelaervet on TikTok, begins: "Even though Frenchies are not as bad as their bigger counterpart the English Bulldog, they're walking health conditions and they're a pretty expensive breed to buy.

"So unless you're flush with cash, I genuinely don't recommend people buy Frenchies.

Dr. Bozelka then offers a run-down of the common health conditions commonly associated with the breed.

"Frenchies are predisposed to a lot of different eye conditions – some of them because of genetics," he explains.

"There's also a couple orthopaedic conditions that Frenchies are predisposed to with one of the more unique ones being what's called a hemivertebra, which is nothing more than a deformed bone in the spinal column.

"I've also seen a lot of Frenchies rupture discs in their neck or their back which can lead to an emergency which may necessitate an MRI and surgery."

He goes onto say how Frenchies are also what's called a brachycephalic breed.

"What that means is their nose isn't long, it's smooshed in like they just ran headfirst into a brick wall," he explains.

"With this can come a condition called brachycephalic syndrome which is a combination of a couple of different things that make it hard for the Frenchie to breathe normally, hence why a lot of them sound like pigs."

The vet concludes by noting how the brachycephalic syndrome also predisposes them to pneumonia and heat stroke."

It wasn't long before the post went viral, racking up a whopping 876k views and several comments, with many pet owners quick to offer their opinions.

"As a mum of 3 Frenchies. I appreciate the honesty and the education. They are work and $$$$," agreed one.

A second penned: "I agree with you but there are a lot of other dog breeds that are pre-disposed to health conditions as well….luckily my Frenchie is a healthy boy."

A third commented: "As a vet tech, I'll also mention they get god awful skin conditions too. Screw tail, dermatitis, mites, allergies, recessed vulvas, etc."

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: "When Frenchbulldogs are bred correctly with the correct health testing in place they’re very healthy dogs. Reputable breeders is what’s needed."

And a further added: "This is why I cried when I saw it made the top breed this year. Like noooooo."
