The most popular seaside destinations this summer – and Cornwall DOESN'T make the cut

THE most popular seaside destinations for a holiday this summer have been revealed – and Cornwall didn't take the top spot.

Instead, the less popular Sandgate in Kent took the top spot, followed by beaches in Lincolnshire and Durham.

The survey, conducted by Airbnb, revealed the top trending seaside destinations across the UK for this summer.

The top spot was given to the destination with the highest year-on-year growth when booking for the summer season.

Sandgate, a small village in Folkestone, is often overlooked in favour of the other popular Kent spots such as Whitstable, Ramsgate and Margate.

The pebble beach has even recently opened a number of colourful beach huts, while families can opt for fish and chips from the nearby cafes.

Leader of Sandgate Parish Council, Tim Prater, said: "Our award winning beach has held the Seaside Award for eight years running and we've got both long established and new places to eat and drink.

Close behind Sandgate were Ingoldmells and Sandilands, both in Lincolnshire, followed by Seaburn in County Durham.

Blue Flag beach Hornsea also made the top ten, as did Portishead in Somerset.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb said: "This past year has seen a real resurgence of the great British seaside holiday.

"And it’s not just the familiar summer stalwarts that are feeling the love; this hotlist shows that Brits are exploring lesser-known destinations and favouring well-loved gems as a means of escape this summer."
