The city named culinary capital of the UK – with the best food festivals, markets & Michelin-guide grub | The Sun

A CITY in the north of England has been named the country's culinary capital thanks to its popular food markets and Michelin-Guide restaurants.

Recent research from hotel company Accor revealed the best cities to grab a bite to eat in the UK.

The cities were ranked based on their Michelin Guide listings and their digital footprints, which were scored out of 100.

Factors such as social media posts, Google Reviews, and news outlet analysis were used to determine the UK's culinary capital.

According to the research, Sheffield was crowned the culinary capital of the UK thanks to its food festivals and food markets.

One of the northern city's culinary events is the Sheffield Food Festival – a large market-style event that celebrates the city's food and drink scene.

The Sheffield Food Festival is currently the city's largest free-to-attend event taking place across large swathes of the city centre, including the Peace Gardens, the Winter Garden, Millennium Square, Town Hall Square, and Pinstone Street.

In previous years, an Artisan Market has showcased fresh produce, spices, preserves, oils, cakes, and craft beers from local producers.

Other attractions at the festival have also included a stage where bands and DJs have been known to play.

The culinary event is set to return during the late May Bank Holiday Weekend in 2024.

The northern city is also home to plenty of other street food markets, including Peddler Market.

Set inside the Peddler Warehouse Neepsend, in the industrial heart of Sheffield, the independent market covers a whopping 7,500 square feet.

The popular food market isn't held every weekend, so visitors will have to keep an eye on the space for details.

While Sheffield doesn't have any Michelin-starred restaurants, nine places in and around Sheffield are listed in the Michelin Guide.

One of those is Juke & Loe at The Milestone, which is owned by chef brothers Luke and Joe Grayson.

Other restaurants in the Michelin Guide in Sheffield include Rafters and Jöro, which is set within the Krynkl shipping container development and run by a husband and wife team.

And there's more to Sheffield than its food scene too, as Time Out named Kelham Island in Sheffield as one of the coolest neighbourhood's in the country.

Kelham Island was formed in the 12th century when a stream was diverted to power a nearby mill.

The area, which was once home to derelict warehouses, is now filled with independent bars, restaurants, shops, cafés and breweries.

One of the city's main attractions is Sheffield Winter Garden, which is home to 2,500 plants from across the globe.

The award-winning winter garden is the largest urban glasshouse in Europe, and it has been described as a "beautiful relaxing space" by visitors.

Other attractions in Sheffield include the Millennium Gallery, one of the most-visited free attractions in England.

There's also Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Sheffield Cathedral, and the National Videogame Museum.

Meanwhile, Accor named Edinburgh as the second-best foodie city in the UK.

Completing the top five foodie cities in the UK are Newcastle, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Belfast, Cardiff, Brighton, Bristol, and Liverpool finished off the top ten.

Meanwhile, flights could soon take off from Doncaster Sheffield Airport again.

The airport, also known as Robin Hood, closed last November after its owners the Peel Group said it was not “commercially viable” to keep it open.

Now South Yorkshire’s Labour Metro Mayor and Labour-run Doncaster Council appear to be about to hammer out a deal with Peel.
