New UK flights launch to Europe's most underrated festive city – with one of the world's original Christmas markets | The Sun

A BUDGET airline is launching flights to an underrated festive city in Europe that's often overlooked by Brit holidaymakers.

Wizz Air is launching flights to Salzburg in Austria.

The flights will operate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from London Luton Airpot to Salzburg.

Prices start from £21.99 for a one-way ticket, with a flight time of two hours.

The new flights will officially launch on February 8, 2024.

Until Wizz Air's new route takes to the skies, Brit holidaymakers can reach Salzburg on airlines like Ryanair and easyJet, with fares starting from £16 for a one-way ticket in December.

Set on the border with Germany, Salzburg is home to one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world.

Dating back to the 15th Century, the Christkindl market is often described as "underrated" by both travel bloggers and travel experts alike.

Travel Blogger Alice, who is known as Adventures of Alice, included Salzburg in a piece all about the best underrated European Christmas Markets.

The Christmas Market takes place in the heart of the city's historical centre.

Located in Residenzplatz and Domplatz, the Christmas Market is home to more than 100 wooden stalls, choral concerts, and a festive parade.

Other attractions include a horse-drawn carriage, a giant Christmas tree, and a brass band.

There are plenty of other reasons to visit the Austrian city too, including a deep dive into its long history.

Not only is Salzburg the birthplace of the world-famous composer Mozart, but it's also where the iconic movie The Sound of Music was filmed.

Several bespoke walking tours take place throughout the city, including the original Sound of Music Tour and the Take a Sound of Music Walking Tour.

Most of the tours stop at sites like the Hellbrunn Palace, and the church in the town of Mondsee, where Maria von Trapp gets married.

Salzburg is also described as the "Rome of the North" thanks to its Baroque architecture.

Meanwhile, other must-visit attractions include the Hohensalzburg fortress and the Monchsberg Hill.

The Austrian city is also well-situated for plenty of day trip options, including the fairytale village of Hallstatt.

Zsuzsa Trubek, Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: "We are pleased to announce the new route from London Luton to Salzburg and give travellers another wonderful holiday option, while also connecting families between the UK and Austria.

"Salzburg is a beautiful city with a range of attractions for UK tourists to explore.

"From the museums to the Eastern Alps, it is a great destination for anyone looking for a solo trip, family holiday, or a trip with friends."

Wizz Air also recently relaunched flights to Chişinău – the capital of Moldova.

Earlier this year, low-budget airline Ryanair announced that it was adding seven new routes from its three London airports.

The seven new routes include Belfast, Basel, Ouarzazate in Morocco, Poprad in Slovakia, Tirana, Treviso, and Vigo.

The budget airline will also add more flights to 30 other routes that it operates out of Stansted, Luton, and Gatwick.
