I am single and feel so lonely – lockdown's really getting to me

DEAR DEIDRE: I DROVE away from my family Christmas in floods of tears as I usually do. I’m so lonely.

I’m a single woman of 30 and I have friends. Lots of them. The trouble is, they don’t live near me, so under the current rules I can’t see them.

Lockdown has been a real struggle.

Family gatherings are lovely and I’m comfortable seeing everyone, but my mum and dad are still together and my sister who is 32, has a very happy family life with her husband, a little daughter and a second baby on the way.

My niece was a year old on Christmas Eve, so it was lovely to be able to get together with my family for a special day after such a horrid year.

But it’s always the same – Mum and Dad wave me off and I just feel so sad that I haven’t got somebody special just for me. I have hobbies and a good job, but I feel so empty.

Mum tells me to focus on the positive things in my life but as soon as I leave any party or get-together, it hits me like a wall.

DEIDRE SAYS: Feeling lonely is upsetting and doesn’t only affect the elderly. But you do have your age on your side.

Unfortunately the current restrictions do mean very limited socialising opportunities.

But keep focusing on your friends and interests for now.

You can network with friends when the pandemic allows and also check out an organisation called meetup.com, where like-minded people can get together for all sorts of hobbies and events – plenty of which are held online.

My e-leaflet Widening Your Social Scene is also packed with ideas on how to broaden your horizons when the Government rules about socialising are eased.

The key thing is not to put pressure on yourself. Give it time and you will find a match.
