A commuter has slammed train passengers over their ‘pathetic’ remark after they refused to up their spare seats to a mother and son.

Earlier this week, an anonymous Reddit user, from the UK, detailed the awkward exchange on the forum ‘British Problems’.

In their lengthy post, the passenger explained how they were recently on a ‘packed train’ going from Milton Keynes to London.

During their journey, the person noticed a couple – who were later revealed to be work colleagues – siting around a table seat which could accommodate four people.

In order to secure the area for themselves, the passengers were sitting on the aisle seats and had put their bags on the chairs next to the window.

At first, the passenger wasn’t bothered by this. However, they said they couldn’t help but speak up as the train got busier.

They wrote: ‘I see a mum and her son looking for seats so I go grab them and tell them there’s two spare seats over by me. We just have to ask them to move.’

After leading the duo to the spare seats, the person explained how they then asked their fellow train passengers if they could move their bags.

The Reddit user continued: ‘They both stand up and ask me where they should move.

‘Granted I am tired and respond quite bluntly with, “I don’t care just allow these guys to sit down.”‘

Rather than agreeing give the mother and son their spare seats, the woman used the excuse that she need to be ‘sitting by [her] colleague’.

The Reddit user added the side-note: ‘She was on a phone call the whole time.’

The infuriating exchange ended with the pair insisting: ‘If someone wants to sit here they could just ask.’

The British Reddit user said that the situation is a good illustration of the difference between people living in the North and South of England

The Reddit poster continued: ‘At this point the mother and son have walked off to avoid the drama.’

Although the person said they ‘could have handled themselves better’, they went on to blast the passengers’ ‘pathetic’ remarks and encouraged people to use their ‘common sense’ in these situations.

They said: ‘Have a bit of consideration for others and LET PEOPLE SIT IN THE AVAILABLE SEATS.’

What’s more, the passenger says the situation is a good illustration of the difference between people living in the North and South of England.

They concluded: ‘I’ve spent the last year living in Newcastle (as a southerner) and it’s so glaringly obvious how some entitled some people are down here. Rant over, sorry guys.’

The post prompted other members of the forum to share how they would have dealt with the scenario

The post sparked fury in the comments and encouraged other members to share their similar experiences of ‘selfish’ passengers.

One said: ‘I just need to give a look, no words. They always move. It’s a fairly uncompromising look that communicates an intent to either on them, their belongings or the seat that should be empty. Like I say, they always move.’

‘It really annoys me,’ another added. ‘It’s not hard to put your bag on the floor.’

‘A polite “hey, can you move your bag please” works every time,’ a third said.

Admitting that they’ve accidentally fallen foul of this unspoken rule in the past, a fourth wrote: ‘I’d rather not put my bag on a dirty floor but will happily move it when I see it’s busy.

‘But sometimes I have headphones on in my own world looking out the window and don’t notice.’
