Maya Hawke and Rupert Friend slammed for 'insufferable' behaviour at Cannes

Maya Hawke and Rupert Friend are at the centre of severe backlash for … dancing.

The Stranger Things star, 24, and Anatomy of a Scandal actor, 41, are currently at Cannes Film Festival to celebrate the upcoming release of the newest Wes Anderson flick Asteroid City.

And while the flick itself is getting mixed reviews, it’s two of the film’s stars that are stealing the spotlight today, and not for the reason they might want.

The pair were pictured arriving on the red carpet of the prestigious festival on Tuesday, Maya in a class retro green dress, with blue elbow-length gloves and blocky white heels.

Rupert, meanwhile, wore a smart white tuxedo with black bowtie, and the co-stars certainly looked the part as they were pictured dancing up the carpet together in front of the cameras, Rupert seen spinning the young star by the hand.

It’s clear from photos and a video clip that the pair are having a great time – unfortunately, it did not go down as well with those watching from home.

‘This is insufferable what the hell are they doing,’ one Twitter user wrote underneath a video of the pair.

‘Anything for publicity,’ one scoffed, while one asked: ‘wtf are they doing?’

‘Maya,’ another said simply, along with a face-palm emoji.

One even labeled the popular actress ‘annoying and narcissistic’ – but was quickly shut down by a person who asked a very fair question: ‘Because she’s DANCING?’

Others leapt to defend the pair, with one exasperated fan writing there was ‘no way people are being miserable over this god forbid you have fun at a premiere.’

‘This is such a joyous way to hit a red carpet,’ another praised.

Maya and Rupert’s new film sees them among a jaw-dropping cast of A-listers, including Tom Hanks in his Anderson debut.

Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Tony Revolori, Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Margot Robbie and Liev Schreiber also star.

It tells the story of a small and quirky desert town who are visited by aliens and forced into a government-mandated quarantine.

Asteroid City is competing for the coveted Palme d’Or prize, joining a list of iconic films from Parasite to Pulp Fiction.

Maya and Rupert may have made headlines for having fun on the red carpet, but leading man Tom turned heads for different reasons, as he appeared to lose his cool with a man at the festival.

In pictures from Tuesday evening, Tom is seen looking less-than-happy and pointing his finger in the face of a man on the red carpet, while wife Rita also appears flustered.

We have no answers as to what exactly was going on -maybe he was doing a bit? – but our eyes and ears are peeled.

Asteroid City will be released in UK cinemas on June 23.
