David Domoney shares tips for ‘adding colour’ to gardens

Spring is just around the corner which means many Britons are busily preparing their gardens for the warmer weather. New plants, outdoor furniture and even lighting are just some ways you can inject a bit of life back into a weathered garden. But for those looking to add a bit of colour on a budget, gardening expert David Domoney has revealed some of his top tips on ITV’s This Morning.
Known for his role alongside Alan Titchmarsh on Love Your Garden, David has a plethora of experience when it comes to gardening.
Today, David explained how now that the weather is warming, plants are beginning to bloom.
“The soil is warming and plants are starting to come into flower,” David said.
The gardening expert said forsythia bushes are great for adding a bit of colour to a garden and can grow quite tall.
He continued: “We’re going to see these splashes of gold all over the country.
“Such an easy plant to keep. It grows quite big, it can grow up to about three metres although you can trim it into a hedge.
“It’s a big, bushy green shrub for the rest of the year.
“Great for nesting birds – they really love it.”

Forsythias are among the first plants to flower in spring and are relatively cheap too.
You can get your own at a garden centre from around £10.
If you’re looking for even more colour in your garden, David recommended a flowering currant.
Speaking about one he had to hand, he said: “This is a flowering currant. Just a little early for it but you can see the buds.
“They’re starting to flower roughly around the same time as the forsythia although forsythias are slightly earlier – but there is an overlap.”
The plant in question is called Ribes Sanguineum or “flowering currant”.
The pretty little plant is perfect for adding vibrant colour to the garden and costs only around £14.99.
When it flowers it has delicate red flowers that are perfect for adding a splash of colour to borders or balconies.
“If you bought them in three litre pots, two plants for about £30, you will have decades of beautiful colour in the spring,” David added.
Other plants which flower in March include daffodils, orchids, freesias and roses.
March is considered the start of flower growth in the UK, with many flowers appearing in the wild including bluebells.
