Redfall needs a permanent Internet connection even in single-player

Bethesda has admitted that you’ll need a constant Internet connection for Redfall, giving the game an in-built expiration date.

Mandatory internet connections for video games are becoming the bane of modern gaming. While it’s understandable for games that are prominently online, like Fortnite, there are games that demand it even if you have no intention of touching the online multiplayer.

We’ve seen it happen with Godfall, with Gran Turismo 7, and now it’s been confirmed that it will happen with Redfall – Bethesda and Arkane’s upcoming vampire shooter.

Redfall was recently given a new release date of May 2, alongside new gameplay footage, but this detail was never mentioned and was only discovered on the game’s FAQ page.

The initial announcement made Redfall out to be akin to co-op games like Left 4 Dead, but developer Arkane has since stressed that it’s more like Ubisoft’s Far Cry series and can be played from start to finish as a single-player game.

Yet anyone who wants to experience the game this way will still require a stable Internet connection, and neither Arkane, Bethesda, or Microsoft have given a real explanation for why that is.

All the FAQ page says is that ‘A persistent online connection is required for single player and co-op,’ adding that you will also require a Bethesda.net account and you need to link your account with your Steam or Xbox account too.

Aside from the fact that this means the game is unplayable for those without unternet access, Redfall is also at risk of becoming unplayable altogether once the online servers shut down. Even if that won’t happen for several years.

This is especially ironic considering Microsoft has championed its preservation efforts with the Xbox’s backwards compatibility.

It’s always possible that Bethesda and/or Microsoft will reverse the decision down the line. Back 4 Blood, for instance, used to be online only even in single-player, until developer Turtle Rock Studios updated it so the story mode could be played offline.

Still, there’s a worrying sense that publishers are growing more dependent on Internet connections. For example, physical copies of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 don’t even contain the base game on the disc, with players needing an internet connection to download most of it.

Redfall launches for Xbox Series X/S and PC on May 2.
