Meyers Leonard has been trending on social media all day following being caught using an anti-Semitic slur in a video.
The Miami Heat basketball star was overheard saying the slur in a video game livestream and the team issued a statement that says Meyers will be away “indefinitely”.
“The Miami Heat vehemently condemns the use of any form of hate speech,” the basketball team said in a statement on Twitter on Tuesday night (March 9).
The statement adds, “The words used by Meyers Leonard were wrong and we will not tolerate hateful language from anyone associated with our franchise. To hear it from a Miami Heat player is especially disappointing and hurtful to all those who work here, as well as the larger South Florida, Miami Heat and NBA communities.”
“Meyers Leonard will be away from the team indefinitely,” the team concluded. “The Miami Heat will cooperate with the NBA while it conducts its investigation.”
The incident occurred earlier in the week when Meyers was on a Twitch stream and playing Call of Duty. In the video, he can be heard using a series of expletives, including an offensive term about Jewish people, when he encounters another player.
