I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! star Seann Walsh revealed the lowest point in his career to campmate Babatúndé Aleshe on Wednesday’s episode.
As the pair discussed their comedy highs and lows, Seann recalled the time just 30 people showed up to his gig, following his scandal on Strictly Come Dancing.
Seann’s career was riding high before his controversial 2018 appearance on Strictly, where he kissed his professional partner Katya Jones when they were both in relationships.
Remembering the experience as they did the washing up, Seann said: “15 nights/16 nights at the Apollo. So funny, it’s the classic you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. It’s that cliché. It’s like, ‘Oh, I was doing well. I didn’t realise.’”
“Easily the most depressing month of my entire life, Edinburgh after Strictly. We get to Edinburgh, right, I think it’s a 200-seater, I’ve never not in Edinburgh sold out the first night. It doesn’t even occur to me that it’s not sold out.
“Just before I’m about to go on, my agent comes in and goes, ‘Just so you know, there’s like 30 people.’ To get told that when you’re just about to go on… horrific. It was at that point I was like, ‘Oh, oh…’”
Babatúndé, 36, said: “‘Oh, they don’t like me.’”
Seann added: “My career was dead, I was over.”
He said his career changed overnight as he was dubbed a love rat, and he even considered switching jobs after the scandal, to avoid being spotted in public.
Seann continued: “My agent said, ‘There’s nothing I can do. I’m sorry, I’ve tried. I’ve tried everything.’ Do you know what I did, I thought, I’ve got to learn to drive.
"I can’t sit on trains, with people looking at me going, ‘Is that the guy that used to…?’ I’ve got to learn to drive now as I’ve got to hide. Genuinely. I mean that, I swear on my life. I can’t be on trains.”
Babatúndé said of his own career: “I stopped because I had a mental block. I can’t come up with new stuff. I just can’t come up with new jokes, it’s just not happening for me. I lost the love.
“I made the smart choice, left acting and I was just working, normal 9 to 5. Then a month later, everything changed. Mo [Gilligan] invited me to do a podcast with him and then he was like, ‘Oh, do you want to come on tour with me?’
“From there it just went crazy. From an office job to 10 nights at the Apollo to the 02 arena, to here. To the jungle. I’m so grateful for this opportunity.”
In the Bush Telegraph Babatúndé added: “We love joking and making things seem as though it’s always good, it’s always funny. A lot of the times we never talk about some of the hardest times.”
Seann said in the Bush Telegraph: “Me and Baba definitely have a connection just by the fact that we are comedians.”
He previously spoke to Sue Cleaver in week one about his past career struggles.
He told her: “Me and my dance partner, who was married, I was in a relationship, we were photographed kissing when we were on Strictly Come Dancing…that was the front page of every newspaper.”
Sue asked: “Why did that crucify you? Why did that have such an impact?”
Seann replied: “To be totally honest with you, my poor ex, my girlfriend at the time, posted a statement. My girlfriend [at the time] posted a statement and that was the end of me.”
Seann has said the Strictly incident and fallout left his mental health severely damaged.
In the Bush Telegraph, Seann said: “That’s something in my life that I don’t want to go back to. Obviously, I knew it would come up. They come up so naturally here. I just want to move on. It’s really nice to have people that will listen and are so lovely and wonderful.
"I just want to be clear that I’m very sorry about what happened and I really want this to be a positive experience and it really has been. I want to come out of here and move forward.”
Sue added in the Bush Telegraph: “He’s a lovely lad. He’s a sensitive soul, very sensitive soul. He’s been through the ringer the last three years. I think he’s really brave and I’m glad he’s here.”
