The star, who wanted to be a fighter pilot as a child, also shared an array of snaps of herself flying her twin-engine plane Mildred on her grid and Instagram Stories as she gushed about her love for aviation in a caption.

One picture showed her standing on the wing of a plane after landing in Austria, while another snap saw her grinning in a green flight suit as she posed next to a plane.

As she reflected back on her flights, Carol also expressed her love for aviation in a lengthy caption on her Instagram grid, as she admitted that she wanted to be a fighter pilot when she was a child.

But Carol explained that the Royal Air Force didn’t take female pilots at the time as she said the Top Gun: Maverick premiere was more ‘meaningful’ for her than just a movie.

She wrote: ‘Strictly speaking it should be a gown on the red carpet tonight but this is my little homage to the original Top Gun and to my passion for aviation…

‘You know the ONLY thing I ever wanted to be growing up and probably since….is a fighter pilot. I was born 20 years too early, they didn’t take women pilots in the military in my day but I got my licences in my 50s which closed a happy circle.

‘So tonight isn’t just a red carpet or a movie for me. It’s much more meaningful I guess. I feel the need….the need….to say thank you.’

In 2011, Carol booked a six-week course at a flight school in San Diego and bought a plane when she returned to the UK and continued her lessons, before getting her pilot’s licence in late 2014.

She added: ‘If I could go back in time, I’d tell that little girl staring up at the planes that it doesn’t matter if you’re a woman or a man, it doesn’t matter what people say, and it doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 55.’

Aviation: Carol revealed she’d be wearing her flight suit to the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick on Instagram earlier in the day

In 2014, Carol became Ambassador for the RAF Air Cadets and was the first woman to be appointed as an Honorary Group Captain.

Her latest Instagram post comes after Carol shared a fun throwback snap with Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise ahead of the premiere on Thursday.

She wrote ‘MAVERICK and MATH-ERICK.

‘PIC from a fair few years ago. We were racing cars at @goodwoodrrc having the best best time.

Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to Tony Scott’s classic 1986 blockbuster Top Gun and it has been unanimously praised in early reviews with one even declaring that it ‘improves upon the original in every conceivable way.’

Honoured: In 2014, Carol became Ambassador for the RAF Air Cadets and was the first woman to be appointed as an Honorary Group Captain

Star Tom Cruise, 59, who plays Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and is famous for doing his own stunts, is said to have trained to withstand G-force power and actually flew in real fighter jets for the movie.

Peter Hoskin for the Daily Mail gave the film five stars, writing: ‘Whenever the film threatens to become too cosy, it shocks itself – and us – back into the present with another madly ambitious action sequence.’

Tom underwent a full Aviation Survival Training Curriculum before going up in the US Navy F-18, as did his co-stars. They worked up to the supersonic jets by going up in a succession of slower planes first over many months.

The official synopsis for the movie reads: ‘After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

‘When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialised mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

‘Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.’
