Is dry shampoo wrecking your hair? This is how often you should use it

It’s a long held belief that too much dry shampoo can be bad for your hair – but where’s the truth in it?

A handy product in most people’s bathrooms, dry shampoo can extend the life of your hair an extra day or two before a wash is needed – in fact, there are plenty we love to use.

The shortcut can be controversial, though.

Expert trichologist and Viviscal ambassador, Hannah Gaboardi, is here to sort the fact from the fiction. She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Dry shampoo can be a great way to absorb excess oils from the scalp in between washes.

‘However, like anything, it’s important not to overuse it if you want to maintain optimum hair health’

The risk of using dry shampoo too often is that it can make the scalp dry and lead to product build up on the skin, affecting hair growth.

‘Dry shampoos are often formulated with ingredient like starch or talcum powder which work to absorb the oil and grease from your scalp and roots,’ Hannah explains.

‘If you use dry shampoo too frequently it can increase the likelihood of experiencing scalp dryness.’

To combat this – while still holding onto your dry shampoo cans – you might want to try scalp massages on yourself in the shower to exfoliate the area and fully remove all product excess.

So are they damaging your hair long term? When used here and there, not really.

The key is to properly care for your scalp after use.

‘When dry shampoos are applied correctly, they are absolutely fine to use,’ Hannah confirms.

‘I would suggest limiting use to a few times a week or using it on day two or three hair, and ensure that you are taking good care of your scalp health in general.’

There you have it – you can still save yourself some time by reaching for a can over a full hair wash.

There’s no need to worry, just don’t spray the can too close to the roots, and ensure you’re washing it all out properly with a moisturising shampoo when you do step in the shower.

Hannah recommends Viviscal Thickening Shampoo, which is designed to maintain your hair’s health and strength and contains biotin and keratin to support hair growth.
