Cornwall holidaymakers warned to have negative Covid tests BEFORE visiting this summer

CORNWALL is advising staycationers to get a negative Covid test BEFORE visiting this summer.

The holiday hotspot is also warning families to pack Covid testing kits with them on holiday, as the region expects a huge boom in visitors this year.

The advisory, issued by Cornwall Council, follows a rise in cases in Cornwall, seeing 2,241 new infections in the seven days leading up to July 17.

The weekly average case rate is up from 391.9 cases per 100,000 people to 358.2 cases.

And with travel restrictions abroad, many families are opting for a UK holiday, with Cornwall one of the most popular holiday destinations for families.

Visit Cornwall's Malcom Bell warned visitors to expect disruptions on holiday due to to the rise in cases both in Cornwall and across the UK.

He said: "We all need to understand that the virus will have a great summer of spreading infection if we allow it to, by not sticking to the guidelines.

"The virus will also cause strains on our public and health services, as well as problems when staff must self-isolate in hospitality, so please be on your guard and be patient and understanding when disruptions happen – no one is responsible it is just life in the ongoing pandemic crisis."

The full list of measures that Cornwall Council has advised are:

  • Get a negative Covid test before visiting
  • Get fully jabbed before your holiday
  • Bring all of your own medication if needed
  • Call 111 instead of visiting the hospital, where many are at full capacity
  • Respect people wearing masks
  • Be aware of anxiety some may feel as they emerge from restrictions

Many shops and restaurants may also still require visitors to wear face masks, if social distancing is difficult, to "protect their staff as well as you," they warned.

Earlier this year, Brits were even put on waiting lists for holidays to Cornwall due to demand, with three million holidaymakers expected this summer – up 10 per cent.

One family even had their holiday in Cornwall cancelled – only to find it being resold for £650 more for the same date.
