Is this the perfect woman? As plastic surgeons reveal their most requested star looks, we added a dash of science to create the ultimate composite
- Experts devised mathematical formulae to determine scientific ideal of beauty
- Cosmetic surgery provider revealed many of the most requested facial traits
- We used body parts from 16 celebrities to test the science of ‘perfect’ woman
As every woman knows, there’s no such thing as the perfect body. But that has not stopped scientists from quantifying every inch of the female form.
From eyelash length to ankle circumference, experts have devised countless mathematical formulae to determine the scientific ideal of beauty. While some date back to ancient times and have been employed by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, others have been dreamt up by modern-day beauty professionals.
This week, a survey by cosmetic surgery provider, Transform Hospital Group, revealed that many of the most requested facial traits seen in celebrities conform to these statistics.
So what does the so-called ‘perfect’ woman look like? We used body parts from 16 celebrities to test the science . . .

ROSIE’S PERT BUST
As a lingerie model, it’s no wonder Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is judged to have perfect breasts
As a lingerie model, it’s no wonder Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is judged to have perfect breasts.
But compared with many women, the model’s 34B bust may be seen as slightly on the small side.
According to science, however, it’s not about size but about how well-proportioned they are.
Plastic surgeon Patrick Mallucci, who specialises in breast surgery, says the ideal bust has 45 per cent of the breast above the nipple and 55 per cent below; a ratio which makes them point upwards at a 20-degree angle. In a survey of 1,300 participants, 87 per cent ranked breasts with this ratio as most appealing.
JENNIFER’S SVELTE WAIST
With her shapely 34in hips and trim 23in waist, Friends star Jennifer Aniston fits the proportions exactly
Women have long strived for a tiny waist. But scientists say that the ‘perfect’ waist isn’t determined by a trim dress size, but rather by its proportions in relation to a woman’s hips.
According to a study by New Zealand-based anthropologist Barnaby Dixson, a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7 (or a waist measurement that’s exactly 70 per cent of the hip circumference) is most attractive.
This sends a biological signal that a woman is fertile and likely to produce a healthy offspring, as the ratio reflects the distribution of abdominal fat in the body.
With her shapely 34in hips and trim 23in waist, Friends star Jennifer Aniston fits those proportions exactly.
J-LO’S CURVY BEHIND
Psychologist Dr David Lewis’s research found that men are most attracted to a woman with a curve at the base of her spine of precisely 45.5 degrees. Singer J.Lo sports the perfect angle
Peachy bottoms may be in vogue, but a 2017 study in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour found it’s not all about size.
Rather, says psychologist Dr David Lewis, it’s to do with how a woman’s behind accentuates her waist. His research found that men are most attracted to a woman with a curve at the base of her spine of precisely 45.5 degrees, which makes for both a pert bottom and a slim physique. This angle is measured by drawing a horizontal line from the base of your spine towards your feet.

GWYNETH’S YOUTHFUL HANDS
Gwyneth Paltrow has smooth, unlined palms which are perfectly in proportion to the rest of her body
Experts at Medical News Today say adult female hands should have the following proportions: 6.8 in long, 3.1 in wide and a circumference of exactly 7 in around the widest point of the knuckles, including the width of the thumb.
While there’s no equation for perfect arms, toned and slim have been deemed most attractive in surveys.

POSH’S LONG LIMBS
Victoria Beckham’s legs are longer than average as they are 1.42 times the length of her upper body, giving her scientifically endorsed ‘perfect’ pins
Many of us would love a pair of long legs. A 2020 study by Liverpool University and University College London found the ideal female leg length to be 1.4 times that of the upper body.
Experts say longer legs are seen as a sign of health and sexual maturity. Moreover, according to a study in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal, legs which are clearly aligned from the middle of the thigh bone through the knee to the ankles are deemed the most beautiful.
At 5ft 4in, Victoria Beckham isn’t statuesque, but at 1.42 times the length of her upper body her legs are longer than average, giving her scientifically endorsed ‘perfect’ pins.
EMMA’S SHAPELY ANKLES
A study in the journal Body Image suggested no more than 23 cm is ideal for a healthy female — to which A-list actress Emma Watson measures up exactly
Thicker ankles are a sign of ageing, fluid build-up and ill-health, so a smaller circumference is deemed more attractive.

SCARLETT’S SEXY FEET
Podiatrists say the ideal foot possesses well-formed arches, good central alignment and an even distribution of weight, with a height-to-foot ratio of 6.6 to 1 (in inches), which actress Scarlett Johansson meets to a tee
Podiatrists say the ideal foot possesses well-formed arches, good central alignment and an even distribution of weight, with a height-to-foot ratio of 6.6 to 1 (in inches). Actress Scarlett Johansson, who stands at 5ft 3in and has size 7.5 feet, meets this to a tee.
The ‘Egyptian foot’, characterised by the perfect alignment of all the toes in descending order, is said to be the most attractive and reflects a healthy body shape.

BRILLIANT BROWS FOR HOLLY
Celebrity eyebrow gurus have been using maths to create the perfect arch for years. On a ‘perfect’ face, the high point of the eyebrow should divide the arch at the golden ratio point of the eyebrow. (Pictured: Holly Willoughby who has perfectly arched eyebrows)
Celebrity eyebrow gurus have been using maths to create the perfect arch for years. Brow shape is determined by the golden ratio, an ancient formula that is equivalent to the Greek letter Phi — or 1.6 today.
Two quantities are said to be in the golden ratio if their ratio (a : b) is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger quantity (a+b: a). On a ‘perfect’ face, the high point of the eyebrow should divide the arch at the golden ratio point of the eyebrow.
By this measure, TV presenter Holly Willoughby has perfectly arched eyebrows.
CARA’S RAZOR-SHARP CHEEKBONES
High cheekbones have long been associated with supermodel genes. Cara Delevingne boasts an angle of 80 degrees, about as close to perfection as you can get
High cheekbones have long been associated with supermodel genes. So Rajiv Grover, former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, measured the facial proportions of 100 models and found the ideal angle between the centre of the chin and the start of the cheekbones to be 81 degrees. Cara Delevingne boasts an angle of 80 degrees, about as close to perfection as you can get.
JENNIFER’S NEAT NOSE
Actress Jennifer Lawrence’s nose is practically perfect, as calculated by measuring her head circumference
The ‘ideal’ size for a woman’s nose is apparently a precise 5.1cm. According to researchers at New York University, who showed digital portraits of young women to 4,000 participants in a study of attractiveness, it should turn upwards at an angle of 106 degrees from the top lip to the tip.

BEYONCÉ’S FELINE EYES
A distance between the eyes and mouth that’s 36 per cent the length of the face is most desirable. Singer Beyoncé’s felined-shaped eyes have these perfect proportions
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And a study for journal Vision Research found eyes are judged to be more attractive if the distance between the middle of the pupils is equivalent to 46 per cent of the width of the face.

MARGOT’S SWAN NECK
With a 2016 study setting the latter at a trim 26.5 in, that makes the perfect-sized neck just over 13in in circumference — just like Australian-born actress Margot Robbie’s
A slim neck is associated with good health and elegance. Experts say the circumference of the perfect neck should be exactly half a woman’s waist. CAMERON’S CUTE CHIN
A 2003 study in the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery found the tip of the ideal chin should sit 1-3cm behind a vertical line drawn down from the outer line of the lower lip, which give the fact a heart-shaped appearance, like actress Cameron Diaz
According to the ancient Greek formula known as ‘the golden ratio’, a truly beautiful face is 1.6 times longer than it is wide. A perfect face can also be divided into thirds, whereby the distances between the forehead and the centre of the eyes, the eyes and the bottom of the nose, and the nose to the lower edge of the chin should be equal.

LILY’S LONG LOCKS
A 2004 study in Human Nature journal found long hair is seen as more attractive, as it represents a woman’s genetic code. With her glossy mane, actress Lily James has the scientifically endorsed ‘perfect’ hair
Ideal hair length is determined by something hairdressers have dubbed the ‘2.25-inch rule’.
Place a rule vertically under the lowest point of your ear lobe. Then place a pencil horizontally under your chin, so the end of the pencil crosses the ruler. If the pencil crosses the ruler at less than 2.25cm, you should wear your hair short. If it’s more, wear it long. This takes into account the proportions, shape and angles of the face.

ANGELINA’S PLUMP LIPS
According to a 2017 study, the perfect female mouth should be no less than 50 per cent the width of the face and Angelina Jolie’s luscious lips are 51 per cent of her face
THE perfect female mouth, according to a 2017 study, should be no less than 50 per cent the width of the face, with larger mouths — and that appealing Cupid’s bow — signalling high oestrogen levels.
The same research found that lips considered the most appealing are between 4-5cm long and 1-2cm deep, with the lower lip approximately twice the size of the upper lip. As such, it’s no surprise that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie’s luscious lips are so widely admired.
With a face width of approximately 17cm and lips that stretch 8.75cm from end to end, they make up 51 per cent of her face.
ANNE’S EARS MEASURE UP
Dr Kendra Schmid, assistant professor of biostatistics, said the ears should be the same length as the nose, as seen on Anne Hathaway
