Mum is sad and lonely but I can't give the help she needs as I live two hours away

DEAR DEIDRE: MUM could really do with a friend. She lives two hours away, so I can’t just drop in. I’m worried about her.

She’s had so many knocks – her boyfriend left, her dog died and she was made redundant.

She is 63, while I’m 32. The fun-loving and organised woman has disappeared. She’s lost.

I go up to see her for the day at weekends and know she puts on a brave face but I can tell she’s not coping.

It’s difficult with Covid to make friends. Are there online groups to join?

DEIDRE SAYS: Urging her to join local groups is a positive move. Yes, there are fewer options at the moment with the pandemic but things are beginning to open up.

There is a great organisation called MeetUp. Go to meetup.com, the world’s largest network of local groups, which also outlines online events and groups.

I am also sending you my support pack Fifty Plus, which outlines ways for older people to meet others who are looking for friendship.
