The lunar cycle impacts the tides, the growth of plants, and influences the behaviours of animals – so it would be remiss of us to assume that the moon can’t affect human life. There have been suggestions the lunar cycle impacts menstrual cycles, sleeping patterns, mental and physical health. There is no absolute proof that the Moon can affect human life, but many Brits perform moon rituals in line with the lunar cycle each month.

Each month, the moon moves through its set phases and it is believed by many that this impacts our emotions, intuition, dreams and soul.

Moon mentor and author of Lunar Living: Working with the Magic of the Moon Cycles, Kirsty Gallagher (@kirsty_gallagher_) said: “Month on month the Moon moves through a cycle of different phases from dark to new, waxing (growing bigger) to full, waning (getting smaller) back to dark and as she does she takes us on a powerful inner journey with her.

“Working with the Moon and her phases means that rather than being thrown around by emotions and life, you get to take back control and make relevant changes in your life, working with the ancient wisdom and magic of the moons cycles to do this.”

Both New Moon and Full Moon days are the perfect time for celebrating the moon and harnessing its power and magic.

Kirsty said: “We have so many routines in life, but we have lost touch with having ritual and making things meaningful.

“New and full moon days give us the opportunity for ritual, marking the passage of time and reconnecting back to ourselves and the power and magic of the moon.”

Tomorrow night, Thursday, September 17, a New Moon will appear in the sky.

The next Full Moon is on Thursday, October 1.

New Moon Rituals

The New Moon on Thursday, September 19 is in Virgo.

New Moons are about fresh starts, launching something new, and setting goals and intentions.

Virgo is an earth sign that is all about prioritising, multitasking and meeting deadlines– so the productive energy this New Moon is extreme.

New Moon rituals are exciting. From moon water to journalling to charging your crystals, there’s a lot you can do to make the most of this event.

Kirsty said: “As the new moon is the beginning of a whole new lunar cycle this is a wonderful time for cleansing rituals, to ensure that you start afresh and with a blank slate.

“Use a sage smudge stick or Palo Santo to cleanse your environment and your physical, emotional and spiritual bodies.

“Simply burn the stick, or even incense and hold the intention to use the smoke to cleanse away anything you don’t need. This is also a great time to do energy or chakra healing to really clear your energies.

“This is also the time of the lunar cycle to set intentions so take time on the new moon to set up a quiet sacred space to tune into what you want the following month to bring, and to set your intentions.”

A New Moon is the perfect time to set intentions, charge crystals, and drink moon water.

Kirsty said: “You may even want to create a moon altar on a new moon that you can meditate/journal in front of through the lunar cycle.

“Write out your intentions and what you want the lunar cycle to bring you.

“Now is a wonderful time to charge your crystals with the intentions you set and what you want to create.

“Moon water will also help amplify your intentions. Fill a jug or container with drinking water, charge the water with your new moon intentions (you can also place your charged crystals in the water) and then place the covered water container either outside or by a window on the night of the new moon so it can be charged with the energy of the new moon.

“Drink the moon water to embody your intentions and help bring them to life.”

Full Moon Rituals

Kirsty said the full moon is the moment of completion and release.

She said: “Under the full moon hold a celebration ritual of all that came true or all you achieved during the waxing phase of the moon, do something that feels like it celebrates you and your work through the first part of the cycle.

“The full moon is the time we release all thats stands in the way, so releasing and burning rituals are powerful around the time.

“Write down all that you want to release and let go of in your life and burn it (safely!) under the power of the full moon.

“You can also do releasing rituals around trapped emotions or limiting self beliefs.

“The full moon is also the perfect time for cleansing and charging your crystals, so make sure you put them outside or on a window place so they can soak in the powerful lunar energies.”
