Molly-Mae Hague drinks peppermint tea to reduce anxiety – an expert explains why it works

Molly-Mae Hague has opened up on the terrifying burglary at her and Tommy Fury's Manchester apartment last month in a new video.

The Love Island beauty said the robbery, where £800K worth of goods were taken from the home, was "the worst thing that's ever happened to me".

The experience has meant that the 22 year old, who got tearful during the video, is suffering with her mental health in a different way than she's previously experienced.

"I've never dealt with anxiety before, or what I feel like would be anxiety, until the last few weeks. I think I've definitely been dealing with forms of anxiety," she explained.

"I've constantly been feeling like I've got a tummy ache. I've got knots in my stomach. A constant tummy ache about so many different things. I don't know how to cope with it. I'm working it out myself."

Molly-Mae has credited drinking a specific type of tea for helping her to take control of her feelings.

"Whenever I get this terrible anxiety feeling in my belly, which I've been experiencing recently, and knots in my stomach – literally feeling like I'm going to be sick sometimes from all the things in my mind, I drink a peppermint tea."

She continued, "It really works and I don't know why. I drink peppermint tea by the gallon and I take deep breaths. I sit on the sofa and watch a film with my tea and just calm."

Dr Tim Bond from the Tea Advisory Panel explains why the beverage may be helping Molly-Mae.

“Anxiety can be debilitating and triggered off by thoughts, memories and for some our environment. It can upset the appetite and in some people stress can slow down digestion.

"Peppermint tea with its essential oils, not only smells and tastes great but the ingredients have soothing aspects. Peppermint creates a cooling sensation which is relaxing and soothes the throat, calms the muscles of the stomach and aids food passing more quickly from the stomach giving relief to some symptoms of stress. Other teas can also help in times of stress for example black tea, and even the traditional cuppa can help lower blood pressure."

He continued, "The ritual of putting the kettle on and waiting for a cuppa to brew can also be a mini-reset and time to ourselves. All these actions add up and can help us feel more in control and aid our overall well-being.”

Molly-Mae opened up further on the unwanted feelings in the 14 minute video.

"I do know that anxiety is a lot of a bigger situation than drinking a peppermint tea," she concluded.

"Don't think I don't know that because I do. It's a crippling awful thing. The last few weeks have definitely shown me that it can just hit you at any time."
