Meghan Markle's dog unhappy at being woken during 40th birthday video

Let sleeping dogs lie! Meghan Markle’s beagle Guy looks grumpy at being disturbed during a snooze as he lounges on luxury striped pillow during video to mark her 40th birthday

  • Meghan Markle marked 40th birthday by launching 40×40 – a project to encourage women back into work – and the Duchess’ beagle made cute cameo
  • Guy the rescue dog was seen snoozing on a grey-and-white striped pillow – but is disturbed from his slumber by laughter and glares at the camera
  • The Duchess made the 40 x 40 announcement in a video with comedy actress Melissa McCarthy, and the two-minute clip was shared on the Archewell website
  • Prince Harry pops up at the end of the video to show off his juggling skills, causing Meghan and Melissa to laugh

The Duchess of Sussex’s beloved rescue dog Guy makes a sleepy cameo in the royal’s 40th birthday address with Hollywood star Melissa McCarthy – but doesn’t look entirely happy about being woken from his canine slumber.

The adorable beagle, who has lived with the Duke and Duchess in both the UK and now the US, is seen snoozing on a sizeable grey-and-white striped luxury pillow behind Meghan Markle as she hosts a video announcing a new campaign to encourage women back into work to mark her 40th birthday today.

As the two-minute conversation between the royal and the Bridesmaids star, released this afternoon on the Archewell website, becomes more animated – with giggles galore – the pet is disturbed from his slumber and glares at the camera filming the action.

By the middle of the two minute clip, the beagle is wide awake and looks more than a little grumpy.

It’s no surprise that Guy, who moved to Kensington Palace with the Duchess of Sussex in 2017, made an appearance in the video. He’s been by the royal’s side since she adopted him while still living in Toronto when she starred in Suits.

The beagle had been just days away from being put down; placed in a ‘kill shelter’ after being found wandering in the woods in Kentucky in 2015.

Volunteers from the charity organised for Guy to be driven across to Canada to an adoption event, where the Suits actress spotted him and took him home immediately. The tale of his rescue became the subject of a book, His Royal Dogness, in 2018.

Life has certainly improved for the pooch since then. When the couple wed in 2018, Guy was spotted travelling to Windsor ahead of the royal wedding, in a car with none other than the Queen herself.

Today’s video saw him sat on a luxurious grey dog cushion, while a chic £1,240 Hermes throw blanket (perhaps a nod to Harry given it features the letter H) was strewn over one of the two cream cushioned chairs nearby.

Transcript: Meghan and Melissa launch Duchess’ ’40×40′ campaign in comedy video call

Meghan: Hey Melissa, do you have a second?

Melissa: Hey yeah, of course. I’m working on that email I told you I was going to do – that organic garden? That’s what I’m doing.

Meghan: You know your camera’s on, right? I can see you.

Melissa: Aha, hang on, I’ll be right back.

Meghan: No no, it’s no problem, its fine.

Melissa: I think this will probably seem better for you.

Meghan: Ok, it’s my 40th birthday and I’ve got an idea.

Melissa: I know what it is.

Meghan: Really?

Melissa: My first guess- is it another photoshoot under a tree where you’re looking very peaceful?

Meghan: Peaceful under tree is me every day.

Melissa: No? Ok. Are we finally getting matching tattoos?

Meghan: I mean, you know I already have something very similar across my back.

Melissa: This one’s you, and that one’s me, cause sometimes I’m like: Are we twinsies?

Meghan: You know, maybe we save it for when I turn 50.

Melissa: Are you finally going to do a Suits reunion.

Meghan: Why would I do a Suits reunion for my birthday?

Melissa: Why would the cast of Friends do a reunion for my birthday? But they did it.

Meghan: They did say they would only ever do it for a historical event. I think the bigger idea is –

Melissa: Yacht party, yacht party! Who’s ready for a yacht? When you say no yacht, do you mean zero yachts?

Meghan: No, here’s the idea. Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who’s mobilising back into the workforce. Over two million women in the US alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to Covid. And I think if we all do it and all commit 40 minutes to some sort of active service, we can create a ripple effect. You in?

Melissa: Yes times 40. Forty forty forty, and then 40 times I say yes. Is it ok if I still do it in the hat?

Meghan: I wouldn’t expect anything else.

Melissa: Thanks friend. Bye friend.

Meghan: Cheers.

Melissa: See you at 50.

Today’s video came as the Duchess of Sussex today marked her milestone birthday by announcing the new initiative to help women back into work – with Guy not the only family member making an appearance – Prince Harry is seen juggling in the background.

Speaking in a video shared on the Archewell website this afternoon, Meghan, seen for the first time since the birth of Lilibet two months ago, couldn’t stop giggling as the Bridesmaids actress, 50, helped her launch her ’40×40′ campaign backed by several other famous contacts.

In between fits of giggles with her new friend Melissa made since moving to Los Angeles, Meghan said she is encouraging people around the world to commit to giving 40 minutes of their time to support women going back to work.

Meghan has asked 40 activists, athletes, artists and world leaders to participate by contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to women re-entering the workforce, saying that millions of women have been ‘shouldered the brunt’ of the Covid-19 pandemic and need help returning or regaining work.

Among those who have committed 40 minutes of their time to mentor a woman in their community are singer Adele, poet Amanda Gorman, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

At the start of a Zoom-style call in her spotless LA mansion, Meghan told Melissa McCarthy: ‘It’s my 40th birthday and I’ve got an idea.

Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to give 40 minutes of their time to mentor a woman who is remobilising back into the workforce.

Over 2million women in the US alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to Covid. And I think if we all do it, and all commit 40 minutes to an act of service, it can have a ripple effect.’

Melissa repeatedly interrupts Meghan with jokes about other things she could be doing to celebrate her birthday, leaning on her royal links suggesting a tea party or a bash on a yacht.

But it was Ms McCarthy who laughs the loudest at the end of the call when she spots Prince Harry juggling outside the window, much to Meghan’s surprise.

Today Queen, Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have all shared well-wishes to Meghan Markle on her 40th birthday.

The Royal Family Instagram account, run by the Queen’s Buckingham Palace staff, was the first to post on Instagram and Twitter, sharing three photos of Meghan along with the message: ‘Wishing the Duchess of Sussex a very happy birthday today!’

One of the photos shows the Queen, 95, and Meghan smiling on their first and only joint engagement in June 2018.

Within minutes, Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall added their own birthday messages.

Royal fans praised the ‘gracious’ and ‘dignified’ decision to share the social media posts despite Harry and Meghan’s recent public criticism of the Royal Family in a string of high-profile TV and podcast interviews.

Meanwhile members of the self-declared ‘Sussex Squad’ – fans who support Harry and Meghan – have made donations to charities and organisations supported by the Duchess as part of a fundraising drive they’ve dubbed the #Meghans40celebration.

Among them is One25, a Bristol charity supporting sex workers that was visited by the Sussexes in 2019.

The royal offered fans a rare glimpse inside the Californian mansion she shares with Prince Harry and their two young children.

Chatting via Zoom from her dark grey Apple Macbook computer, the glossy clip was filmed in the same room in which she appeared briefly during her husband and Oprah Winfrey’s recent Apple TV mental health series.

This time viewers were given a more substantial view of the study, which boasted a grand oak desk with a pile of strategically placed copies of Meghan’s children’s book The Bench, along with elegant white file in-trays and decorative glass bottles.

The video comes just weeks after the bombshell announcement that Prince Harry is penning a tell-all memoir to be released next year. The book is described as a ‘definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him’.

The Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William are said to have been completely blindsided by the news.

Prince Harry didn’t feel he needed permission from Buckingham Palace to write the memoir, a spokesman said at the time. The representative told the BBC that Harry would not be expected to obtain permission for the project from Buckingham Palace.

And as the laughter on-screen continues, the family pet gives up on sleep and stares straight at the camera

At one point Melissa holds a ‘besties forever’ poster – made especially for her friend who she asks if she wants to return to Suits

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s ‘truth bombing’ began in March with their extraordinary 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey where they accused the Royal Family of racism towards Archie and ignoring cries for help from a depressed Meghan when she was suicidal and pregnant.

In the chaotic aftermath of the show, watched by almost 100million people worldwide, the couple claimed this would be their ‘final word’ on Megxit, only to continue talking about it in more damaging detail over the coming months.

And now the royals are awaiting the release of Prince Harry’s book, which coincides with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.

There is reportedly concern among courtiers that it could overshadow celebrations to mark her 70 years as Monarch.

However today’s birthday posts suggest the Firm is keen to present a united front despite the reported tension.

Prince Harry, the juggling joker! Duke leaves wife Meghan and her new Hollywood BFF Melissa McCarthy in fits of giggles with background cameo in 40th birthday video

Prince Harry was once dubbed the Royal Family’s ‘resident joker’. And he proved he hasn’t completely lost his sense of humour when he made a cameo appearance in wife Meghan Markle’s new 40th birthday video.

The video ends with ‘bloopers’ from the recording session – including one shot of Prince Harry juggling in the background. The Duke of Sussex, 36, is seen through the window of the couple’s Montecito mansion as he throws tennis balls in the air in the sun-soaked garden.

The moment left Melissa in stitches and prompted Meghan to say: ‘What the?’ before she burst into a fresh fit of giggles.
