Love Island recoupling secrets – picking order, hours of filming and silence rule

Former Winter Love Island contestant and OK! columnist Shaughna Phillips has been back on OK!'s weekly Instagram Live Q&A to discuss all things Love Island.

After last night's dramatic recoupling, which saw new bombshell Danica Taylor choose to couple up with an unwilling Luca Bish, Shaughna, 28, has dished some behind-the-scenes secrets about what exactly goes on in recoupling when contestants are filming the show.

Recoupling filming

Shaughna dished on how long it takes to film the recoupling scenes from the show, saying: "They take hours,

"I would say it depends on how many [couples] there are. It could be an hour and a half to two hours, but when you're sitting down there, you have to sit in silence, so you literally have to sit in silence until you have to say your part, and it's so difficult.

"I remember there would be like times where we would just all burst out laughing, and we would all have to then stop and be straight-faced.

"It's like a class. When one of you starts laughing you all get in trouble, but that is what it's like, and when there is a good few of you in the villa, that could take ages…

"It's actually quite funny if you've been there since the beginning and then like if one of the new guys is going to couple up, you literally watch their face when they think it's probably going to take a few minutes, but when the penny drops that you're going to be there for a long old time, you see their soul kind of leave their body."

Filming late into the night

Shaughna also revealed that sometimes filming goes so late into the night that they can "hear birds chirping".

She said: "You can hear the birds start chirping and you're like 'oh my god, I should really be going to bed right now', and then, I remember, there would be times when some of the girls would sit on the beanbags and one of us would literally cry 'cause we're so tired, and you've just got to kind of wait for one more thing to happen and if that one scene or that one conversation takes ages, you're just like 'just do what they're asking you to do 'cause you're just knackered".

Islanders divulging coupling intentions

On whether Islanders need to tell anyone before they announce who they would like to couple up with, Shaughna said: "Well, you sometimes have conversations with producers, and they like ask…", before she changed tack.

She continued: "I think it kind of depends on the picking order, because the picking order is very important, that kind of determines the chain of events.

"But also – I was thinking about this the other day – when Danica was going for her chats and then she got the text, she wouldn't have had time to tell anyone what she was going to…who she was going to pick… she looked as shocked as we all did, so I don't think… in certain times you don't tell anyone [producers] but in other times you do".
