Inside Emma and Matt Willis’ 17-year long relationship

Matt Willis has given fans a sweet glimpse into his relationship withEmma Willis as he celebrated his 39th birthday earlier this week.

Busted band member Matt took to Instagram to post a loved-up snap with 46 year old Emma while enjoying a barbecue with their family and friends.

Emma meanwhile made sure that the big day was as perfect as possible by taking responsibility for the mocktail tray.

She joked: “Think I'm better at drinking them than serving them.”

This isn’t the first time that the A-list couple, who married back in 2008 and share three children, Isabelle, Ace and Trixie, together, have given a peek into their relationship.

With their sizable Instagram followings, the pair often gush over one another on Instagram with their dedicated birthday and Valentine’s Day snaps.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a peek into Emma and Matt’s relationship…

Addiction troubles

When the pair met in 2004, Matt was still performing in Busted and Emma was busy working at MTV as a presenter.

They started dating a year after, thoughMatt spent some of this time visiting rehab for alcohol and drug addictions.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Emma has opened up about her decision to stick by her beau.

“I wasn’t going to leave him because he had a problem. I wanted to help him, but he had to help himself and I believed he would,” she said.

After spending three years in and out of rehab, the musician found sobriety in 2008.

Quirky date nights

Though much of their time may be spent parenting their three children, it’s clear that Matt and Emma do their best to prioritise spending time with one another.

The couple regularly post snaps together as they enjoy some often unusual date ideas, including attending Halloween parties and volunteering at Covid-19 vaccination centres.

In an interview withWoman & Home, Emma said that this was the secret to their marriage.

“[We] still like each other, we love each other, and fancy each other. We try to make time for each other with date nights.

“He asked me the other day, ‘Shall we have dinner out on Friday?’ but to be honest, I’d prefer to stay at home,” she explained.

Wedding vow renewal

To celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, the loved-up pair held a vow renewal party in 2018.

To make the day extra special, the party was held at the same venue they got married at, Rushton Hall in Northamptonshire.

Explaining the decision on This Morning, Emma said: “I think it’s just quite nice to wear it again if you can, or just customise it.”

Gender neutral parenting

Over the years,Emma and Matt have been applauded by fans for challenging gender stereotypes in their parenting style.

In 2020 the doting mum posted a snap of their son Ace looking super stylish in a pink crop top and sporting long blonde hair.

As fans flooded the comments with support Emma spoke to Good Morning Britain about how she felt “overwhelmed” by the response.

“He's a very free and open-minded boy who is like, 'Why do I have to dress in green and blue and grey if I like pink and red and purple? Why is that not okay?,” she said.

“There was some negativity but that's the beauty of the block button.”
