Drivers risk ‘serious hazard’ in autumn as experts warn of ‘slippery leaves’

The UK weather has dropped to seriously low temperatures this week.

Earlier this month, the Met Office forecasted wintry showers as "White Christmas" may well be on the cards.

And it seems as though the bitter cold will begin to appear this weekend, with reports of -3C for Bonfire Night.

Now experts at Euro Car Parts warn drivers that leaves could "turn into mulch" which can make them become "slippery".

They have urged motorists not to travel in areas with lots of trees in a bid to avoid being caught out.

Euro Car Parts said: "Despite making autumn a beautiful time of year, falling leaves can pose a serious hazard for motorists.

"This is because when wet leaves are crushed by cars, they can turn into mulch and become slippery."

They told drivers to pay extra attention when passing through rural or tree-lined areas.

Meanwhile, experts at Saga warn hitting a bunch of leaves is "almost as bad as hitting black ice".

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has also issued a warning on the dangers of leaves.

They said: "Your vehicle will take much longer to stop on a wet surface, particularly one covered with wet leaves.

"Adjust your speed and leave a longer following distance so that you are always able to stop in the distance seen to be clear."

Even Toyota has also issued its own warning as part of its online UK magazine.

The manufacturers said: "Wet, fallen leaves are extremely slippery and can obscure road markings or conceal other hazards.

"Take greater care when driving through rural areas by reducing your speed and paying close attention to your lane discipline."

Toyota also warned leaves could "block drainage holes" and have an impact on your car windscreen.
