Not even the ultra-cool Diane Sawyer can resist the growing cult of “Ted Lasso.”
The 75-year-old broadcast legend has responded to her mention in the second season premiere of the hit Apple+ series “Ted Lasso,” starring 2021 Emmy nominee Jason Sudeikis, 45, as a relentlessly positive soccer coach.
During Thursday’s episode, AFC Richmond boss Rebecca Welton (played by Hannah Waddingham) asks Coach Lasso “what [he] would say” to a post-match drink.
Quipped Lasso, “Oh, the same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me out on a date: Yes, please.”
It would appear the iconic ABC newswoman is onboard as she took to social media to respond: “Dear Ted Lasso — I’m in. Your move.”
This, as one fan pointed out, was her first tweet in 14 months. Never one to drop the ball, an earnest Lasso followed up with Sawyer, whose husband of 16 years, “The Graduate” filmmaker Mike Nichols, died in 2014.
“Oh my … you’ve got me more on my heels than Lady Gaga at the Met Gala,” read the response from the “Ted Lasso” Twitter account. “Any chance you like biscuits?”
Fans were stoked to ‘ship this on-screen love connection, including the fictional footballer and gold-standard grouch Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), who couldn’t help him self from retweeting Diane’s come-on with a series of trophy emojis.
Reality and fiction have blended as both Sudeikis and the man he plays are currently embroiled in breakups — Lasso from his wife back in the US, and Sudeikis from ex-partner Olivia Wilde, with whom he shares two children.
Sudeikis recently opened up about the split in an interview with GQ.
“That’s an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about,” he said of his relationship with Wilde, 37, who apparently left Sudeikis for a tryst with pop idol Harry Styles, 27. “You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it.”
Even Sudeikis himself can see the parallels, he told GQ. “It’s the closest thing I have to a tattoo,” he said about Ted Lasso. “It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever made.”
