Beauty expert shares three skincare rules all women must follow

Starting a proper skincare routine is not easy, especially when there are millions of products and conflicting social media tips.

Not to mention, everyone has a different skin type, formula preference, schedule and lifestyle,

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Nadia Fihema, Education Manager UK and Europe for Huda Beauty and Wishful Skincare about the biggest skincare mistakes women make, how to reduce signs of ageing and the correct number of steps required for an effective skincare routine.

In terms of the biggest skincare mistakes women make, Nadia revealed: “Not working with their skin type and not knowing what their skin type is before buying.

“I always recommend speaking to an expert before purchasing skin care. Not knowing your skin type can lead to purchasing products that will irritate the skin or make your skin worse.

“Another big one for me is not having a daily routine for night-time and day time your skincare should differ and be much heavier in the evening to help and support your skin repair while you sleep.”

Nadia shared some of the top skincare rules that everyone should follow: “There are lots of things to think about when it comes to skincare but I have three things that I always talk about.

“Number one: Less is more that refers to both the routine and the amount of product you apply, you really don’t need an overly elaborate routine you just need to find a few products with magic ingredients that suit your skin.

“Number two: Always wash your makeup off before bed with lukewarm water, even if you don’t wear makeup as your skin is full of pollution, sebum, dead skin cells and impurities that can cause blemishes from blocked pores.

“Number three: SPF is a must for every day! Not just when it’s hot, this is literally the best anti-ageing product on the market and protects your skin from pigmentation, redness and of course against skin cancer.”

As for a skincare routine, the expert said “There are six to seven steps to a proper skincare routine”.

These are: “Cleanse, prep/tone, serum (you can use two), if you have a concern a targeted treatment, moisturizer, SPF for the morning and oil for the evening.”

Nadia also shared her number one product she recommends everyone has in their skincare routine: “Hyaluronic acid serum and SPF I can’t pick between the two.

“SPF because it protects your skin and hyaluronic acid is amazing for deep hydration and giving your skin that youthful glow.”

When it comes to smoothing out the skin, Nadia “loves enzyme scrubs” because “they aren’t harsh and work great on sensitive skins”.

“I personally suffer with rosacea so I always try to find a scrub which isn’t abrasive,” she added. Wishful’s Yo Glo scrub is extremely popular on social media as it successfully removes dead skin cells and gently smooths and brightens for a glowy result.

And anyone looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles should consider hydrating their skin. Nadia explained: “Hydration is key to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”

Wishful has an amazing Thirst Trap Juice serum that has been rated 4.5 out of five stars by Boots customers for its effectiveness at moisturising the skin.

Otherwise, Nadia recommended hyaluronic acid because “this works to plump the skin and then fitting in another serum or moisturizer which is full of collagen and peptides, you need to find a product which has both as collagen needs a friend as support and peptides are the best friend collagen can have”.

As for when should someone start an anti-ageing skincare routine, the expert said: “Your natural collagen production starts to deteriorate from the age of 20 so start young, you will never be able to turn the clocks back with skincare so its better to start as soon as you can.”

On top of this, when it comes to depuffing the eye area and making them look brighter, Nadia said: “Caffeine and hyaluronic acid are the best ingredients in skincare to depuff the eye area so find a cooling eye cream that has those ingredients in, and also invest in a eye-roller for the mornings this will speed up the process of depuffing!”

Finally, the expert said: “With all of these tips I would always say stay hydrated, drink lots of water as this helps with everything.”
