The Met Gala is technically a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but let’s be honest: It’s mostly an excuse for a bunch of super famous celebrities to dress in beautifully designed outfits and socialize with each other. Which sounds like a blast (would give anything to chill with my husband/son Timothée Chalemet), but some celebs are…simply not into it and, incidentally, have made their feelings all kinds of known.
While Anna Wintour has only admitted to indefinitely banning one person from the Met Gala, plenty of celebrities are rumored to being banned due to comments they’ve made about the event. Meanwhile, some others have simply made it clear they don’t want to attend. Like, ever again! Time to meet the stars you probably shouldn’t expect to show up on the steps of the Met this year.
Rachel Zoe
There were rumors that Rachel was nixed from the Met Gala invite list after she told the New York Times, “Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say that I’m more influential. As great as it is, Vogue won’t change a designer’s business. But if an unknown brand is worn by a certain person in a tabloid, it will be the biggest designer within a week.”
But she said this in 2007 and she was at the Met Gala in 2012, so!
Donald Trump
Anna Wintour herself confirmed that he was banned, telling James Corden “Donald Trump” when asked which celebrity she would never, ever invite to the Met Gala.
Demi Lovato
Demi candidly chatted about their experience at the Met Gala during an interview with Billboard in 2018, and they haven’t attended since. “I had a terrible experience,” they said at the time. “This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.”
Demi actually went directly from the Gala to an AA meeting, saying, “I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on—millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting. And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala—fake and sucking the fashion industry’s dick.”
Demi also poked fun at how awkward they felt at the Met Gala in a since-deleted Instagram that they defended when it was taken out of context:
