Three ‘laid back’ and ‘relaxed’ houseplants which ‘thrive off neglect’

Houseplants that are 'impossible to kill'

Snake plant

According to Morag Hill, co-founder of The Little Botanical, snake plants “don’t mind a little neglect”, because they are native to Africa and Madagascar where the climate is warmer.

The expert said: “You can enjoy their presence without worrying about them needing too much care.”

This houseplant can go weeks without needing a drink, and it is important not to water it too much to prevent root rot.

Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies, added: “You can never go wrong with a snake plant, they’re one of the most laid back and relaxed plants you could own.

“They thrive off neglect, so even if you forget to water them, they’ll still look after you by purifying the air within your home.

“According to NASA, the Snake Plant is one of the best plants for improving air quality, removing toxins such as formaldehyde, ammonia and carbon monoxide from the air, making it an ideal home and office plant.

“We recommend placing it on your bedside table to help you drift off into a blissful slumber at night.”

Spider plant

Spider plants, known for their attractive green and white foliage, are super low maintenance compared to other houseplants.

They don’t need much water to survive and there is no pruning needed in order for this indoor plant to thrive.

They can tolerate heavy shade, but prefer to grow in light shade which makes them ideal for rooms like the bedroom.

The experts at Stelrad said: “You can basically forget about this plant and it will still thrive in your home.

“Does that make it the ideal plant maybe? Just watch out because if you have cats this plant is mildly hallucinogenic and slightly addictive for some cats.”

Peace lily

The peace lily is a very resilient plant and can bounce back very quickly from an insect infestation or a few missed waterings.

They will do best in humid rooms and will tolerate low light conditions, with the kitchen and bathroom ideal locations for them.

Make sure to check the soil is dry before hydrating this plant though, as it will not like being overwatered.

Samantha Jones, gardening and plant expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk told Hammonds Furniture: “Bringing plants into your home can be beneficial to freshen up the atmosphere.

“Aside from being visually appealing and improving the aesthetics of your home, plants have a calming effect on us.

“Make sure that the plant pot has drainage holes in the bottom so your plant is never sat in water.

“Place your plant near a light source, whether natural or artificial.

“Finally, if you are new to gardening, you should try to stick to low maintenance plants such as aloe or monstera.”
