Three flowers to plant in autumn that will naturally pesky weeds from growing

Gardening expert on how to keep your garden free of weeds

Every gardener knows that weeds are part of the chores of taking care of a garden, but it can be a daunting task to keep removing them on a weekly or even daily basis.

If left alone, weeds will take up nutrients, water and sunlight in the soil from other plants, making them weaker than they should be. They are also likely to attract pests, which will eat away further and kill plants.

This can make it difficult for garden crops or flowers to so survive the upcoming frosty winter weather if they are not strong enough, and come spring next year gardeners may even have to deal with an infestation of pests.

There are many weed killers gardeners can buy but it is highly recommended to never use harsh chemicals in your garden as they can greatly harm the local wildlife, especially at this time of year when creatures such as hedgehogs will be collecting food in gardens to hibernate.

However, this is a very easy and natural solution to dealing with weeds, which is to plant weed-suppressing flowers which will not only save you lots of work and time but will keep your garden beautiful.

Creeping Thyme

Creeping Thyme is perfect to grow in autumn as it is a very hardy herb flower which can thrive throughout the colder seasons. It will add a pop of pink, red or purple to gardens in the wintertime and is highly fragrant, which will attract lots of pollinators

Creeping Thyme has allelopathic properties, which naturally release chemicals that can prevent the growth of seeds and its dense foliage also acts as a barrier to prevent weeds from being able to grow.

Azaleas are flowering shrubs which range in many colours from pink, purple, red, orange and yellow so there are many to choose from. They are commonly viewed as a flower which brings good luck.

These big shrubs will shade the soil, making it hard for weeds to grow and there dense foliage will naturally suppress weeds.

Azaleas are best planted in milder seasons such as spring or autumn. They will require mulch made from leaves or bark chippings in order to thrive before the upcoming colder weather but are easy to take care of the plant.

Ajuga

Ajuga are hardy lavender-coloured perennials that are best planted in either spring or autumn when the soil is warm and moist but can be planted at any time of the year. It is easy to take care of as it can grow in dry conditions.

They create a thick carpet of foliage which means weeds cannot easily grow and will be smothered.

However, it is a member of the mint family which means it can quickly grow and spread if left undisturbed. Make sure to keep them in a designated area of your garden with some sort of barrier in order to stop them from spreading too much and will need regular pruning.
