‘Instantly destroy’ patio weeds for just 29p with ‘perfect’ cupboard staple

Gardening tips: Four homemade hacks to kill garden weeds

1. Boiling water

Gena Lorainne, gardening expert at Fantastic Services, explained: “Boiling water is a very aggressive and quite effective method to get rid of weeds from hard-to-reach places.

“This is simply because the hot water can destroy practically every plant, no matter how tough and meaty its leaves are.

“This solution is never used around regular plants because it would kill them instantly too.

“Using boiling water to kill weeds is quite easy – you just need to boil some water and pour it on the patio while aiming for the cracks where the weeds live.”

Gardeners should notice they turn yellow and look dead in just a few minutes which means they’ll be gone for quite some time.

2. White vinegar

White vinegar contains lots of acids, which makes it the perfect cleaner for around the home, as well as being killing “perfect” for weeds.

According to the expert, the 29p household essential can “instantly destroy” garden weeds so should be used with caution, only on patio ones.

The pro said: “To treat the patio weeds with vinegar, you must dilute it with water. The best possible proportion here is one part vinegar and two parts water.

“Then just pour it over the cracks, aiming for the middle sections of the weeds. The vinegar, combined with the sun, will dry them out for an hour or so.”

3. Vodka

According to Gena, vodka can also be used to keep a patio clean from weeds by simply mixing 30ml of it with two cups of water and some washing-up liquid.

The gardening expert continued: “For a better effect, you can pour them into a spray bottle and shake a little. Then you’ll have to spray all the weeds and cracks you find on your way.

“Then just leave them be, and the sun will do the rest. The only way this solution won’t work is if the place you spray it around has no exposure to the sun because the vodka may dehydrate the plant, but the sun is the one which dries them.”

4. Baking soda

Baking soda can “kill” every plant it touches, according to Gena, who recommended using it on paved patios.

To use this household staple, simply sprinkle it onto the patio, sweeping it into the cracks.

The expert noted: “The sodium, which is contained in the baking soda, will make sure that the atmosphere there is very unpleasant for all the weeds.”
