Last week, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a food recall on various savoury products sold in major supermarkets. The organisation warned Britons “not to eat” the products as they contained salmonella.

Although Tayto Group Ltd, the brand behind the pork scratching products, issued an urgent food recall to customers last week, the warning seemed not to have reached some people in time.

Some Britons still ate the products and have fallen ill as a result.

Public Health England said 176 people had become sick with salmonella poising, while more than 50 had ended up in hospital.

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever.

Tayto Group Ltd issued a recall on six of its products in total.

They are all sold in a range of British supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Iceland.

The products affected include four Mr Porky items, which are Mr Porky Original Scratchings, Mr Porky Crispy Strips, Mr Porky Crackles, and Mr Porky Prime Cut Scratchings.

Both Tayto Group Ltd and the FSA shared advice to Britons last Friday, August 20, telling consumers not to eat the products.

If customers had already bought the pork scratchings, they were advised to return them to stores for a full refund.

This remains to be the advice for shoppers who may still have the products in their homes.

All snacks being recalled have best before dates up to and including February 19, 2022.

The Mr Porky Original Scratchings come in various pack sizes, including 65g and 16.5g.

The Mr Porky Crispy Strips and the Mr Porky Prime Cut Scratchings are in a 35g pack, while the Mr Porky Crackles come in a pack 70g in size.

Another product being recalled is Kay’s Pork Scratchings, which has the same best before date as the other snacks and come in a 60g pack.

The Real Pork Crackling Company Pork Crunch is also affected by the recall, and this again has the same best before date and comes in both 30g and 70g packs.

However, unfortunately, some people were not made aware of the food recall warning in time.
