The Great British Bake Off is back on our screens tonight. While you’re watching, try this autumnal treat by Bake Off legend Mary Berry.

As the days become darker and colder, we know we are in the throes of autumn.

According to Country and Town House, the fruits in season for October are apples, pears, figs, plums and quince.

This means the food is at its peak, and usually when it tastes the best.

What better way to celebrate autumn than to try out one of Mary Berry’s mouth-watering desserts?

The cookery legend was recently appointed a DBE for her services to broadcasting, the culinary arts and charity.

At 22-years-old, Mary moved to France to study at Le Cordon Blue culinary school.

Her first book, The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, was published in 1970.

She has since published more than 75 cookery books, and has made several television appearances, namely as a judge on The Great British Bake Off from 2010 – 2016.

This easy British classic can be fun for the whole family.

Mary Berry’s recipe, from Mary Berry Cooks, serves six.

To make Mary Berry’s apple crumble you need:

13lb five oz cooking apples

One half lemon, juice only

Three and a half oz light muscovado sugar

For the topping:

One and three quarter oz plain flour

One and three quarter oz porridge oats

Five and a half oz walnuts, roughly chopped

One and three quarters oz sunflower seeds

Three and a half oz softened butter

Method

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees or Gas four.

Peel and core the apples, then cut them into thin slices. Place in a small flameproof casserole with the lemon juice, sugar and six tablespoons of water. Bring to the boil, then place in the oven and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the apple is tender but has not fallen to a pulp.

Put the dry topping ingredients in a mixing bowl and rub in the butter until it is evenly distributed and the mixture has formed small clumps. Spread the mixture evenly over a baking tray and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp.

Stir to break up the crumble and sprinkle over the hot apple.
