Greggs has upped its vegan artillery in recent years, welcoming the vegan sausage roll, vegan steak bake and vegan breakfast options among other things. Now, the high street baker is getting into the spirit of Christmas with a new vegan-friendly festive item.

The Festive Bake originally launched in stores in 2009 and has become an annual delight for many fans of the bakery.

In recent years, however, there has been growing demand from vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers to ramp up the plant-based festive menu offerings.

In 2019 Twitter user @kawaiikhloee vowed: “If we don’t get a vegan festive bake this year I might riot.”

The calls for a vegan alternative continues in 2020, with Twitter user @5ubterranean stating: “Vegan Festive Bake please I’ll sell my soul.”

This year, Greggs has granted their wishes.

What is in the vegan Festive Bake?

The vegan Festive Bake offers a meat-free alternative to the traditional Festive Bake.

The seasonal delicacy will be filled with Quorn mycoprotein pieces, sage and onion stuffing and a vegan bacon crumb, finished with a sage and cranberry sauce encased in puff pastry.

Contrastingly, the original Festive Bake includes chicken pieces, sage and onion stuffing with sweet cure bacon, alongside sage and cranberry sauce, encased within puff pastry.

Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs, said: “The Festive Bake is the latest iconic Greggs Bake to receive a vegan-friendly makeover, and it retains all the classic Christmassy flavours of the original.

“There’s nothing better over the festive season than tucking into delicious Christmas food, and we’re confident that customers will love our latest tasty Bakes.”
