Giada De Laurentiis Shared the Most Delicious Twist on a Classic Apple Pie & It Couldn't Be Easier to Make

Apple pie is one of those desserts that just screams fall! There’s nothing better than diving into a slice of sweet and tart apples tossed in cinnamon, baked in a buttery, flaky crust when the weather cools. But if you’re looking to explore the vast world of other apple desserts, then start with Giada De Laurentiis’ Torta Di Mele. It’s a rustic apple cake that combines all the fall flavors you love in a caramelly, fluffy dessert.

“In Italy, the fall season is all about harvest — and this cake is representative of that spirit!” the caption on a recent Giadzy post reads. “What better way to ring in the season than filling your home with the smell of apples and cinnamon?”

Over on her website, De Laurentiis describes her Torta Di Mele as “rustic and nonfussy” and can be enjoyed after dinner, or even at breakfast with a cup of coffee or tea.

To make this cake, start by slicing up about six Granny Smith apples — “they have a great tart flavor to them, and they hold up better while baking than other apple varieties might,” the Giadzy recipe reads. Toss these slices with cinnamon and granulated sugar and let them sit while you prepare the rest of the cake.

The base of the cake is a mix of regular flour and almond flour, which gives it a subtle, nutty flavor. And Greek yogurt is used instead of oil to help keep the cake rich and moist during baking.

To assemble, first, add a layer of Granny Smith slices to the bottom of the pan. “The layer of apples on the bottom gives the cake a rich caramel flavor,” De Laurentiis writes. Then, cover that layer with your cake batter. Finally, layer the rest of your apple slices on top. Finally, you’re ready to bake, and most importantly, eat!
