Lockdown has made a lot of designers feel like dancing. Among those fantasizing about a joyful spin across the dance floor this season was Zuhair Murad, who overcame challenges, including a draconian lockdown in Beirut, to produce an unashamedly glam fall collection.
The designer drew inspiration from the abstract paintings of Wassily Kandinsky for the jaunty geometric motifs embroidered in sequins on a short black chiffon cape trimmed with ostrich feathers, and the sequined chevron patterns strategically placed on sheer evening gowns.
Long fringes were used to dramatic effect on everything from a gold knee-length dress to a sharp-shouldered ruby red minidress (just be careful not to whip anyone in the eye while you’re spinning around).

Murad catered to every personality, with short dresses, including a fish-skin effect sequined silver number that came with a removable satin duchess puffball skirt, to sweeping evening gowns, skirts split over one thigh, that were equally suited for ballroom dancing and hitting the red carpet.
Even though the devastating explosion in Beirut last August completely destroyed his headquarters, Murad is fielding requests for the Grammy Awards and the Oscars. The house recently published a glossy coffee table book with Assouline showing its creations being worn by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and Elle Fanning.
In a celebration of his hometown, Murad set his collection video to “Radio Romance,” a catchy track by Lebanese indie rock band Mashrou’ Leila. Planes may be grounded, and nightclubs remain shut, but music has no borders.
