The eight skincare mistakes ageing you – and why your night time routine is making you look SO ancient | The Sun

WHEN it comes to our skin no one really wants to see signs of ageing. 

But the way in which you look after your skin could see the wrinkles appear much earlier than they should. 


So how do you navigate all the conflicting information available online and find ways to stop ageing without breaking the bank?

We spoke to skincare expert and Facial Cecilia Ross and founder of Cecilia London to learn the top mistakes she has seen her clients make and how to perfect your night time routine. 

Firstly forgetting a full night cleanse. 

Cecilia says: “It is so important to cleanse before bed every evening in order to wash off makeup and pollutants that become embedded in the pores throughout the day.”

“This allows our skin to breathe throughout the night and replenish nutrients that it needs to look healthy and therefore youthful.”

She warned: “Waiting till the morning will stop this from happening, skin will be dehydrated and you’d be more likely to have blocked pores and congestion.”

Despite what you might think there is no rule that says you need to wash your face right before you go to bed. 

The skin pro says: “Top tip- cleanse your skin the moment you get home from a busy day, then you don’t have to think about it before going to bed!”

Not wearing SPF

There probably wouldn't be a bigger error when it comes to skincare than forgetting to wear SPF everyday. 

Cecilia says: "UVA and UVB rays are both very harmful to the skin and contribute to the ageing of the skin.”

“These can damage our skin cells even when the sun isn’t shining. Wearing SPF is your skins armour that you must wear everyday (even when out on your morning run!)”

Forgetting to Hydrate your skin

The beauty expert says: “Hydrating serums and moisturisers are essential to keeping the skin looking youthful. If the skin is kept hydrated it will look brighter and more radiant.”

Exfoliation done the right way 

Despite what you might have been told, rubbing your skin with face scrubs can do a lot more harm than good but exfoliation is still important. 

Cecilia says: “Light exfoliation will help to accelerate the skin cell turnover, which essentially means it will help to shed the dead skin on the surface, allowing the skin to renew.”

“This will help to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and can help with any skin concerns you may have.”

Overloading your skin

Yes there are tons of different products on the market but spending your money on all of them isn’t necessarily the answer to beating ageing. 

Cecilia says: “Having too many products can overload your skin and prevent you from getting results.”

“You don’t want to over-exfoliate or over-moisturiser as it can lead to dryness, irritation and congestion.”

Consistency is key 

Skincare is 24/7 which means there is no room for taking a week off, especially when it comes to preventing wrinkles. 

Cecilia says: “ Keeping your skincare routine simple is the perfect way to keep consistent, we often find it hard to stick to a routine that takes too long to get through!”

“ With a simple routine, you’re more likely to stick to it, not get overwhelmed and in turn your skin will benefit and you’ll see results.”

Lastly, two more tips outside of skincare that make a big difference. 

Lack of sleep

If your a night owl then consider getting to bed sooner because it could be ageing you prematurely. 

Ceilia says: “Getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night will help to improve the overall health of your skin. Sleep allows your skin to renew throughout the night, stimulating your skin cells and working to repair damage.”

Ditch the cigarettes

Sorry smokers but whilst there are plenty of negative side effects to smoking, premature ageing is one of them. 

Cecilia warns: “Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin which starves your skin of nutrients which make it look younger and brighter. It can also cause premature wrinkles and discoloration, so best to avoid!”
