The Queen and Boris Johnson both greeted the many guests at Windsor Castle as they hosted a reception ready to mark the Global Investment Summit. Her Majesty met Microsoft founder-turned-philanthropist Bill Gates during the reception. She also greeted the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, for the occasion.
For this prestigious event, the Queen sported a beautiful silver heart-shaped brooch as she usually does for her royal engagements.
This brooch, according to jewellers from jewellerybox, was worn by the Queen as early as 1956, just three years after her coronation in 1953.
It is made from the “largest rough diamond ever discovered” according to the experts, and so would make sense to wear such a rich jewel to meet billionaires like Bill Gates.
She has since worn it at her grandchildren’s weddings, exciting royal engagements, and even to show her love to her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellerybox, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about this heart-shaped brooch the Queen wore on Tuesday evening and its rich history.
Daena said: “The Queen’s Cullinan V brooch is composed of an 18.8-carat heart-shaped diamond, set in a platinum frame with sun ray-like wire details extending from behind the central diamond onto scroll and laurel motifs fashioned of smaller diamonds.
“The eye-catching Cullinan V heart diamond was among a selection of nine principal diamonds, numerous brilliants and unpolished fragments created from the largest rough diamond ever discovered, which weighed a whopping 1,055.8 carats.
“The Cullinan V brooch is a family heirloom that was designed by Garrard for the Queen’s late grandmother, Queen Mary, who famously wore it to the Delhi Durbar in 1911.
“Valued at up to £9.4million, the brooch has been a favourite of the current Queen who consistently pairs it with pearl necklaces.
“She has worn it on numerous notable occasions from the christening of her godson, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, in December 1956, to her 2008 Christmas Broadcast, to her first front-row appearance at London Fashion Week in February 2018 and Princess Eugenie’s wedding October 2018.
“Most memorably though, the Queen wore the Cullinan V brooch for the official portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh’s 99th birthday.”
The Queen paired this historic brooch with a turquoise jacket and skirt in a matching print with white detailing.
The Queen was also joined by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge at the reception.
Prince William looked very relaxed, as he opted for a navy suit, crisp white shirt, and red tie.
The Duke could be seen with a drink in his hand as he chatted to guests in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall.
The Queen met some leading figures in Windsor Castle’s green drawing-room before the Royal Family members mingled more widely with the guests.
Also present at Windsor Castle were the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent.
The Summit, which was organised by the UK Government, is aiming to “showcase the best of British innovation and highlight the UK’s role in green investment and clean technologies, to some of the most senior and influential business leaders from all over the world,” according to a statement from the palace.
Her Majesty put on a stylish display as she welcomed the billionaires into her favourite royal residence in what was deemed a very lavish reception.
On Wednesday the Queen cancelled a trip to Northern Ireland at the request of her doctors who advised her to take some rest.
