I’m a sleep expert, three drinks to avoid if you want to get a good night’s rest… and WATER is one of them

EVERYONE has experienced the frustration of a bad night's sleep at one point or another.

But did you know that the types of drink you consume before bed can have a massive impact on the quality of your sleep?


And while some of the drinks to avoid are obvious – such as anything caffeinated – there's one that might surprise you.

Water.

“In healthy young adults, your urine output is lower at night than during the day,” the Sleep Foundation website explained.

“This helps prevent you from waking up during the night to use the bathroom.

“Drinking too much water in the evening may disrupt this balance."

To avoid disrupting the balance, make sure you drink plenty of water during the day to avoid getting dehydrated.

"Then drink less water in the evening to avoid trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night," the site added.

The next drink to avoid is soda.

The majority of these drinks are full of caffeine and sugar, both of which can impact sleep.

A recent study found that people who have a high amount of sugar during the day wake up more frequently during the night.

And lastly, while lots of people enjoy a glass of wine with their dinner, it's a good idea to avoid drinking wine before bed.

This is because alcohol disrupts the body's circadian rhythms – the cycles that run 24 hours as part of the body's internal clock.

Wine, or any alcohol in that matter, affects the chemicals that make us feel sleepy and then subside once we've had enough sleep.

Instead of drinking water, soda or wine before bed, consider trying warm milk, a decaffeinated tea or a herbal tea.
