Q) I’ve always wanted to work for myself, so once the pandemic eased, I left my job and set up my own business.

For a while, things went really well, but when the cost of living crisis hit, my turnover fell.

I’ve managed to stay afloat by doing some part-time tutoring for my friends’ kids, but I need to earn more to support my family.

I’m gutted, but I’ll have to return to being employed.

When updating your CV, there are several ways you can highlight your entrepreneurial journey and present it in a positive light.

You need a wide range of skills to run your own business, such as project management, marketing, financial management, customer service, problem solving and adaptability.

Showcase what you achieved while running your business, and emphasise your ability to wear different hats and juggle tasks.

This demonstrates your versatility, which is valued highly by employers.

In your cover letter or during interviews, briefly explain your decision to transition back to employment.

Be honest about the challenges you faced, but frame it as a proactive and responsible decision to ensure the financial stability of your family.

Make use of your network, including former clients and contacts, as they may be able to provide leads or references that can help you secure a position.

Setbacks are a natural part of life and career journeys, but it’s how we deal with them and what we learn that’s important.
