Selma Blair just got real during her latest appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. The Sweetest Thing actress and Barrymore got candid about their past struggles with alcohol and addiction, and how motherhood has helped them both change for the better.
“I felt hope for the first time in those first sips, and so you chase it all night, you chase the hope and warmth, but I didn’t look for my own,” Blair explained of her relationship with alcohol, which she also talks about in her memoir Mean Baby. Like Barrymore, Blair had a dependent relationship with alcohol as a child, and she recalled taking sips of a rum and coke at the tender age of 7.

It wasn’t until her son Arthur Saint was born in July 2011 that the picture started to change for Blair. “I had no idea I had hope until I saw my son, and I love him more than anything,” she said.
“And I think, oh god, if he started drinking right now, or if he started doing the hurtful things to girls that people did to me. What would I do in loving to get him on track right now?” Blair thoughtfully shared, noting that while her experience should not be romanticized, she can use it in an informed way to break generational cycles of trauma.
“We love our kids the most and we realize we want nothing to get in the way of that,” Blair concluded. Barrymore enthusiastically agreed, saying that having kids “made me find the high round with will, with them,” the host added.
Blair shares her 11-year-old son with her former partner, American fashion designer Jason Bleick. They ultimately split a year after his birth but have coparenting since their separation.

Back in 2019, Blair told People that the coparenting was going amicably and that her ex has “shown up in a big way,” especially since Blair’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2018: “We have a flexible custody arrangement and Jason is a huge part of Arthur’s life,” she says. “He’s shown up in a big way. I’m really proud of us.”
Blair’s memoir Mean Baby was released in May, and it’s been a bestseller on Amazon!
