As Jean Paul Gaultier prepares to unveil its Spring/Summer 2022 ready-to-wear collection later today, fans of the legendary French fashion house now have something else to get excited about: the launch of the JPG archive rental service.
Fashion rental platforms have become part of the new normal in 2021, with companies such as Second Outing and MY WARDROBE HQ leading the way for the millennial and Gen-Z generations who want to periodically get their hands on rare clothes. Aside from this, there’s not much in the way for people who want to get up-close-and-personal with the history of fashion, and this is exactly where Jean Paul Gaultier comes in.
Over 30,000 pieces are due to be available for rental purposes — including iconic pieces such as the punk-inspired custom Schott perfecto jacket, various cone bra corsets popularized by Madonna in 1990, and the cage dress as seen on Eurotrash. Out of the thousands of looks available, 50 of them will also be available to purchase in full, with each being sourced directly from private collectors and archivists from around the world.
Speaking to WWD, Jean Paul Gaultier managing director Antoine Gagey said, “We want to explore new ways of buying and experiencing fashion by mixing in the same platform.” With this in mind, it now allows us to experience fashion from a bygone era and some of the industry’s most iconic looks for ourselves.
As The Guardian reports, prices will start at around €150 EUR (approximately $175 USD) for a scarf, while those wanting to rent a cage dress for a short amount of time could spend nearer to €700 EUR (approximately $811 USD). The platform is due to launch today on the Jean Paul Gaultier website.
