According to reports, Heinz has now announced that it is facing a ketchup packet shortage across the united states. The shocking supply issue is reportedly a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as the CDC has issued guidelines urging people to “avoid using or sharing items that are reusable, such as menus, condiments, and any other food containers.” The shift to single-serving condiments has pushed an increase in demand that strained supplies pushing the price of packets up 13 percent since January 2020.
Despite already making “strategic manufacturing investments at the start of the pandemic to keep up with the surge in demand for ketchup packets driven by the accelerated delivery and take-out trends,” Heinz now needs to push its production to meet “the country’s overwhelmingly high demands.” Heinz is now reportedly set to refocus its manufacturing lines to increase production by 25 percent to produce more than 12 billion packets a year.
