During former president Barack Obama‘s two terms as president from 2009 to 2017, his daughters Malia and Sasha Obama were the First Daughters of the United States. And though they were as private as they could, cameras and the country’s eyes were always on them, all throughout their pre-teen and teenage years. Now, 24-year-old Malia and 21-year-old Sasha have moved away from the spotlight, embarking on their own personal and professional adventures.
“I’m on the other side of parenting,” proud mom Michelle Obama told the TODAY Show recently about being their mom. “I’m moving from mom-in-chief to advisor-in-chief.”
Michelle went on to explain that she’s someone they look to for guidance but is no longer needed for managing the day-to-day. A true empty-nester! “That’s a lovely thing to be able to watch my girls fly and have the relief that, ‘Okay, I think I didn’t mess them up.’”
Indeed you didn’t Michelle, and we have proof to show for it! Check out every detail we know about the youngest Obamas – from their college experiences, rumored boyfriends, current jobs, and living situations – below!
They Grew Up at the White House
Though we’ve seen them grow up before our eyes, it’s easy to forget how little Sasha and Malia were when they first moved into the White House – Malia was 10 years old and Sasha was only 8. The two then went on to live all their pre-teen and teen years at the official residence during Barack’s two terms, from 2009 to 2017.
They’ve Gone Through Ups and Downs
“There was a period of time when they couldn’t stand each other,” their mom Michelle said on the TODAY Show in November. “And I said, ‘You wait, you are going to wake up one day and you’re going to look over at that other person, and you’re going to know that you two share something very unique,’ especially given what they’ve been through,” she added.
And, as it turns out, Mama Michelle was right. Right now, the two are each other’s close friends. “To see them in that place where they’re one another’s support systems and they’ve got each other’s backs, it’s the thing that a mother would want,” Michelle said.
Malia Went to Harvard
After taking a gap year before college, Malia followed in her parents’ footsteps and enrolled in the prestigious Harvard University in 2017. After four years, Malia earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, with highest honors in 2021.
Malia Has an Impressive TV Industry Portfolio
Throughout her time at Harvard, Malia gathered up an impressive list of internships in the TV industry. Malia interned on Lena Dunham’s dramedy Girls and worked as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s sci-fi series Extant, per People.
Malia is a Writer for Prime Video’s ‘Swarm’
Currently, Malia is working as a writer on Prime Video’s new show Swarm, out March 17, written and executive produced by Donald Glover and starring Chloe Bailey and Dominique Fishback. “She’s just like, an amazingly talented person,” Glover told Vanity Fair about working with the eldest Obama daughter. “She’s really focused, and she’s working really hard.”
Malia Reportedly Used to Date Rory Farquharson
During her first semester at Harvard, Malia Obama reportedly started dating fellow Harvard student Rory Farquharson. England native Farquharson is from a millionaire family, with ties to the British royal family, per Express.
Malia May Be Dating Someone New
After calling it quits with Farquharson sometime in the past couple of years, Malia was photographed on a reported date in August 2022. Per Stylecaster, she was seen hanging out with 33-year-old music producer Dawit Eklund at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art.
Sasha Attended the University of Michigan
In the fall of 2019, Sasha began attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Soon after, however, her studies become remote because of the COVID-19 pandemic and she moved back in with her parents. “There are times where it’s felt claustrophobic, I’m sure, for them,” Barack told People about having their daughters back in the house.
Sasha Transferred Colleges
In early 2022, Sasha transferred colleges to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Per People, she is currently studying psychology.
Sasha & Malia Have Moved In Together
With Sasha’s decision to move to Los Angeles for USC, she and Malia decided to become roommates. The two have already hosted their parents for a night of “cocktails,” per Michelle on the TODAY Show. “The martinis were a little weak,” she said, adding that the two were even picky about using coasters. “You never used a coaster in my house!” Michelle told them. Looks like they’re doing a great job in this new adulting phase!
