Earlier this month, Caroline Polachek took to NPR’s Tiny Desk to perform cuts from her sophomore album, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You. Following that performance, the singer has returned with a new song, her first single release since the LP.
Produced by Cecile Believe, Danny L Harle and Polachek herself, “Dang” is an eclectic track that layers clunky, mechanical sounds over the singer’s floating vocals. The singer uses synth here and there for a twist on her typical sound without ever actually distorting her voice.
The lyrics themselves, however, don’t make much sense literally but see Polachek flex her witty songwriting muscles.
“Pull up like a shipwreck in reverse, yeah, I do, yeah, I do / Maybe it’s forever, maybe it’s just shampoo,” she sings. “Dang / Mary Poppins opened up the purse like I do, yeah, I do / Who’s a pretty city kitty sippin’ on chartreuse?”
Prior to rolling out “Dang” to streaming services, Polachek previewed the song with a performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
