BBC cameras capture Glastonbury proposal during Sir Elton John's set

As Glastonbury Festival 2023 drew to a close, one couple decided to celebrate in the best way by getting engaged during Sir Elton John’s headline closing night set.

The British music icon took to the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm for the last two-hour set of the festival, in a performance being billed as his final live UK show.

Pulling hit after hit from his impressive back catalogue, including Rocketman, Your Song, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me and I’m Still Standing, the 76-year-old dubbed it a ‘special and emotional’ Glastonbury gig.

One couple in particular will certainly agree after BBC cameras caught a proposal on camera in the massive crowd for Sir Elton’s set.

During the singer-songwriter’s rendition of 1971 track Tiny Dancer – for which he welcomed The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers on stage for a duet – the newly-affianced couple were seen grinning as they embraced enthusiastically.

The proposer was also initially glimpsed getting to his feet after bending down on one knee to pop the question in traditional fashion.

His delighted fiancée was also seen fingering her new engagement ring, in place on her hand.

Viewers at home were thrilled to see the sweet moment, with one admitting: ‘Oh god the proposal has sent me over the edge, getting a bit dusty in here #Elton #Glastonbury’

‘Was that an audience proposal during ‘Tiny Dancer? If so, cute,’ asked another, alongside a smiling face emoji with hearts.

‘Getting Elton and Brandon Flowers to play during your proposal takes some beating tbf….,’ joked one person, adding: ‘Congrats to the happy couple.’

‘Ahh a little proposal during the set. Hope they’re very happy,’ chimed in another.

‘I’ve always said a public proposal would be my idea of hell, but in the unlikely event I ever do get proposed to, I’d be totally ok with a proposal in the hustle and bustle of a Glastonbury crowd,’ shared a different impressed fan.

Welcoming chart-topper Brandon to the stage after performances of Your Song and Candle In The Wind for their duet, Sir Elton announced: ‘My next guest I first met in 2005 when I first started playing Las Vegas, and he came to my hotel suite to play me his band’s first album Hot Fuss – we’ve been friends ever since.’

Welcoming Brandon to the stage, he said The Killers frontman was ‘the first person I thought of’ to be a guest during his set.

I’ve always said a public proposal would be my idea of hell, but in the unlikely event I ever do get proposed to, I’d be totally ok with a proposal in the hustle and bustle of a Glastonbury crowd.

Some fans had expected other big name stars to join the Cold Heart hitmaker on stage, including whispers of Britney Spears, Blue, Dua Lipa and even actor Taron Egerton, who played Sir Elton in his 2019 biopic, Rocketman.

However, he surprised the crowd with unexpected musical guests, putting paid to rumours of big names and famous collaborators.

First up was Jacob Lusk of Gabriels, before US singer Stephen Sanchez joined him to perform Sanchez’s song Until I Found You.

After Brandon, his final guest was Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama, who performed Kiki Dee’s part in Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
