Ann Demeulemeester has officially appointed Ludovic de Saint Sernin as the brand’s creative director.
Best known for his gender-fluid designs and sensual style, the appointment of LdSS signals a new creative direction for the Italian-owned fashion house. The designer and the house teased a new vision for the house in a series of photographs by Will Vanderperre and styled by Olivier Rizzo. The images see de Saint Sernin dressed in items from the Ann Demeulemeester archive, dating all the way back to the 1990s. Some key pieces include the black leather halterneck top and see-through mesh top.
WWD received a statement from the house regarding the announcement, “Authorship and autobiography gain centrality, as Ludovic de Saint Sernin shapes the Ann Demeulemeester traits around his vision, proclivities and individuality, offering a first-person reading and the connection with today’s audience that comes from that.” The statement continued, “Sensuality, tension, silhouette, fluidity, wildness and a graphic feel are defining pillars of the language Ludovic de Saint Sernin is about to build as he traces the new course of Ann Demeulemeester, injecting his approach to fashion as a tool to shape and free one’s presence and appearance.”
Before launching his own eponymous label in 2017, de Saint Sernin had his early beginnings working at Balmain. Since the departure of creative director Sébastien Meunier in July 2020, Ann Demeulemeester has been designed by their in-house team. Ann Demeulemeester is one of the original “Antwerp Six,” and began showing in Paris in 1992.
Ludovic de Saint Sernin’s first collection is slated to show next March at Paris Fashion Week for the Fall/Winter 2023 season.
