Miriam Margolyes, 80, said she wasn’t a fan of Glenda Jackson, 85, when she starred as her servant in the production, adding that working with the latter was her “worst-ever professional experience”. Behind-the-scenes, the actress claimed the pair had a “terrible falling out”.
She explained: “I cannot remember what it was about, but I called her a cow and she called me an amateur.
“I think she won that one!”
Miriam added of her ex co-star: “A star actress with little patience and no humility, she has given great performances — but she didn’t in The White Devil, and knowing that she was rubbish made her even nastier.”
In an extract from her new book This Much Is True, serialised on the Mail Online, the actress added that the “general mood was unpleasant” among the cast members.
It’s not the first time Miriam has hit out about Glenda.
In 2013, the ex Harry Potter star said she wished she had never starred in the production and branded her co-star “horrid”.
She added on BBC Radio 4: “I really didn’t like her and I’ve never liked her since, even though she votes Labour and no doubt does good work in Hampstead.
“But goodness me, she was a pain to work with.”
Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Glenda for comment.
Miriam first gained recognition for her work as a voice artist before she landed a number of theatre roles.
She won a BAFTA Award for her role in The Age of Innocence and was cast in the role of Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series.
The actress went on to star in the likes of Blackadder, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Call The Midwife.

Miriam is also no stranger to sharing her thoughts about politics.
On several occasions, she has hit out at Prime Minister Boris Johnson, particularly over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
In her latest rant, she took a major swipe at his 80-year-old dad Stanley Johnson.
The actress blasted the Government as “appalling, incompetent, corrupt shower of t***s”.
She added: “I have never seen such a deplorable collection of people.”
Miriam, who starred on The Real Marigold On Tour with Stanley, went on to blast him as “vile”.
She previously sparked 494 Ofcom complaints for wishing death on Boris when he battled Covid in hospital.
Addressing her comment, she added to The Guardian this week: “Well, I don’t want him to die. But, I wouldn’t mind if he was castrated.”
