Watch: Tiffany Haddish explains to kids why her Grammy win is making her cry

Hold back your tears! Though Tiffany Haddish was unable to attend the 2021 Grammy Awards Sunday, she shared a touching reaction to her best comedy album win.

The “Girls Trip” actress, who was nominated for her album “Black Mitzvah,” was in the middle of filming “Kids Say the Darndest Things” at the time of the awards show. During a segment for the TV show, she told the kids onstage that she was “just happy to be nominated,” before the producer informed her that she had won.

“You just won a Grammy,” the show’s producer told her through her earpiece.

A visibly shaken Haddish paused before finally responding: “I just won a Grammy? Are you serious?”

After taking in the celebratory news, the “Kids Say” host started crying onstage as the kids clapped for her. She then explained why her Grammy win was making her emotional.

“You know a Black woman hasn’t won in that category since 1986?” Haddish informed the kids, referring to Whoopi Goldberg’s win for “Whoopi Goldberg – Original Broadway Show Recording.”

“Can I tell you why I’m crying? It’s a lot of bumpy roads that you cross, right, and it’s a lot of times you feel like, ‘Well, am i doing the right thing? is this really good enough? am I good enough? Am I strong enough to do this job?”

Haddish encouraged the kids to “believe in yourself as much as you can.”

“And against all odds, you just say, ‘you know what, I’m just gonna put my best foot forward and I’m gonna give the world the best that I’ve got,” she said.

“Anything is possible,” she said.

Tiffany Haddish: Grammys exec apologizes after star reveals why she turned down hosting gig

Haddish previously spoke about the Grammys in December, revealing that she turned down an offer to host the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony because she was told she would have to pay for all expenses without compensation.

“All of that would have to come out of my pocket,” she told Variety. “I don’t know if this might mean I might not get nominated ever again, but I think it’s disrespectful.”

“I was like, ‘The exposure is amazing but I think I have enough. I appreciate you guys asking. And as much as I appreciate the honor of being nominated, that’s not OK,” Haddish added, likening the ordeal to being asked on a date and then being told you have to pay for it yourself.

Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy Interim President and CEO, posted a video to Instagram on Dec. 10, apologizing to Haddish. Unbeknownst to Mason, a talent booker for the academy told Haddish they wouldn’t cover the costs, he said.
