Former President Donald Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment trial, but some people can’t help but think of another president who was famously impeached during his time in office. On Feb. 13, 2021, Monica Lewinsky shared an often-overlooked memory from her part in the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.
“Impeachment is very serious. But the worst thing about being reminded of testifying as a witness in the Clinton impeachment is the flashback of how desperately I needed a glam squad for that taped deposition,” Lewinsky tweeted. She added the hashtags #BadHairDay, #BadMakeup, and #BadLighting to emphasize how she really felt.
Clinton was impeached on Dec. 19, 1998 for obstructing justice and lying under oath, per The Washington Post. The former president eventually admitted to the affair, after originally saying he “did not have sexual relations” with Lewinsky. The former White House intern, meanwhile, testified that she and Clinton had an affair, per the Post.
Monica Lewinsky has talked about the Clinton impeachment in the past
Monica Lewinsky hasn’t been shy about the affair, and subsequent impeachment, that propelled her into national headlines. During former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment in January 2020, Lewinsky also referenced the “unflattering lighting” and her “bad hair day” as a witness during former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial. “Gee, too bad i had to give that videoed witness testimony for the senate trial in the clinton impeachment,” Lewinsky tweeted on Jan. 31, 2020. “(I mean, talk about unflattering lighting and having a bad hair day.)”
The Clinton and Trump impeachments had one major factor in common, too. Ken Starr — whose investigation into the Clinton-Lewinsky affair led to the former president’s impeachment — also joined Trump’s defense team in January 2020. On the day the news was announced, Lewinsky tweeted, “this is definitely an ‘are you f**king kidding me?’ kinda day.”
Lewinsky has been outspoken about President Trump in the past, and she’s also been vocal about her White House experience and the way the media treated her. Lewinsky has also written for Vanity Fair about her affair with Clinton and has become a prominent voice for social justice on social media.
There’s nothing funny about Trump’s impeachment and acquittal. But Lewinsky’s jokes about her hair and makeup at the Clinton impeachment show that she’s definitely moved on.
