Lil Nas X Ripped His Leather Pants While Pole-Dancing on Saturday Night Live<\/em>

Half the world might have been watching Eurovision last night, but a memorable music moment happened closer to home. During his guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, Lil Nas X took to the stage to perform his track ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’—and ended up accidentally nearly exposing himself on national television when his pants split open at the crotch during a pole-dance interlude.

It happened towards the end of what was already a risqué performance; dressed a black leather outfit which showed off his ripped abs, the singer was surrounded by an equally scantily-clad cohort of all-male backing dancers, one of whom licked his face and neck at one point in the number.

The whole three-minute sequence was maybe one of the most homoerotic things to ever happen on the SNL stage (a place where intimacy between men is played almost exclusively for laughs), and that was kind of the point. Lil Nas X has confirmed that he was very much making a statement with ‘Montero’ and its provocative music video; by putting unabashedly queer art out into the world, he wanted to decry the homophobia and religious discrimination he experienced when he was younger and closeted. Although he probably didn’t imagine tearing his pants wide open at the seams while doing so.

“NOT MY PANTS RIPPED ON LIVE ON TV,” he tweeted afterwards, followed by: “I wanted to do my pole routine so bad this is what I get lmaoo.”

His musical appearance on SNL also included the live debut of his new single ‘Sun Goes Down,’ which takes a less playful, more emotional approach to similar subject matter, and includes lyrics where Lil Nas X sings about his younger self. For that song, he wore an all-white Mowalola suit (which stayed exactly where it was supposed to).
